Outcome of Surgical Repair of Pulmonary Artery Aneurysms: A Single-Center Experience With 38 Patients

Abstract: PA aneurysms are a real entity, and surgical repair can be done with low morbidity and mortality. Aneurysmorrhaphy or aneurysmectomy can be performed, depending on the anatomic location. Regardless of the size of the PA, we recommend intervention on high-pressure aneurysms due to the occurrence of advanced medial necrosis.

“…Our study presents one of the largest case series of PAAs available. The average age amongst our patients was 59.7 years which is lower than the mean age of patients presenting with aneurysms of the aorta (generally in the late 60 seconds) . Five of the six total patients in our series were females although it has been reported that PAAs develop with equal incidence across both sexes .…”

“…Options in PAA surgery include aneurysmorraphy or aneurysmectomy 7,8 . For patients with focal aneurysm, aneurysmorraphy with excision of the excessive vessel wall is a simple and fast technique but in patients with inflammatory disease and PAH, complete replacement of the entire pulmonary trunk is recommended 4 .…”

“…They also reported 3 patients who had pulmonary artery reduction plasty all with excellent results. In another report on PAA from the Mayo Clinic by Reisenauer and colleagues, 3 38 patients with mean PAA diameter of 5.8 cm had only 1 patient with left main compression and all survived operation to repair the aneurysm. In a more recent study by Nuche and colleagues, 4 among 77 patients with PAA, 7 patients had left main stenosis with 4 undergoing left main PCI.…”
