Osbornite, meteoritic titanium nitride

Abstract: Nevil Story-Maskelyne described in 1870 the mineral constituents of the Bustee meteorite, which was observed to fall in 1852 near Bustee about 45 miles west of Goruckpur, India. The stone, weighing 1429 grams, now preserved in the British Museum collections, was found to consist chiefly of enstatite and diopside, and two constituents proved to be new minerals. Pale, chestnut-brown spherules of calcium sulphide, CaS, Story-Maskelyne named oldhamite and golden-yellow octahedra found embedded chiefly in the oldha… Show more

“…A fast Fourier transform (FFT) diffractogram obtained from the region shown in the inset is given in Figure 2(c). Figure 2(d) shows the simulated FFT diffractogram with the constants taken from the tabulated data [53]. The lattice constant of an individual nanoparticle is measured to be 4.22 Å, which is very close to the tabulated bulk value of 4.24 Å.…”

“…The extra-atomic relaxation energies calculated from the electrostatic model for the titanium compounds are reported in Table 2, which also summarizes the literature polarizabilities 43 -46 and crystal structures 35,36,47,48 used in the calculations. Core and valence Auger parameters are plotted versus 2R E in Figs 5 and 6, respectively.…”
