Origanum vulgare ssp. vulgare: Chemical Composition and Biological Studies

Abstract: The biological properties and main phenolic compounds of the O. vulgare L. ssp. vulgare extract are described in the present paper. The polyphenolic compounds were analyzed by chromatographic and spectrophotometric techniques. The antioxidant potential was evaluated using several methods: CUPRAC (cupric ion reducing antioxidant capacity), FRAP (ferric reducing ability of plasma), inhibition of lipid peroxidation catalyzed by cytochrome c, and superoxide (SO) scavenging assays. The antimicrobial activity of the… Show more

“…hirtum (HCOE) was investigated on highly metastatic and drug-resistant murine (B16-F10) and human (A375) melanoma cells. Indeed, although a potential antineoplastic effect has been associated to oregano extracts [ 30 , 31 , 32 , 33 , 34 , 35 ], the capacity of this herb to contrast the growth of the above-mentioned melanoma lines has never been elucidated in detail. Moreover, as one of the main goals of the cancer research is the discovery of new drugs with limited or without adverse side effects for healthy tissues, oregano extract was also tested on C2C12 myoblasts, which is a non-tumor cell model.…”

“…Moreover, some literature works have also associated a strong anticancer activity to such type of plant extract. For these reasons, O. vulgare is capturing greatly the attention of the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries [ 30 , 31 , 32 , 33 , 34 , 35 ].…”

“…MS detection was achieved by electrospray ionization (ESI) in the single ion monitoring mode (SIM) simultaneous for all 18 screened compounds. All mass spectra were recorded in the negative ion mode, previously demonstrated to be the most appropriate option for this type of compounds [27,28]. During experiments, the capillary voltage was set at 3500 V, the dry gas flow was 12 l/min at 350°C, the nebulizer pressure was kept at 55 psig, and the fragmentor was set at 70.…”
