Kantorowicz nie jest znany jako badacz bizantyńskiego Wschodu. Faktem jest jednak, że przez większą część swej naukowej kariery intensywnie zajmował się Bizancjum. Od 1940 r., czyli od początku swej pracy na Uniwersytecie w Berkeley, regularnie brał udział w konferencjach bizantynologicznych; od roku 1950 tych organizowanych przez ośrodek Dumbarton Oaks. W ostatnich latach życia przygotowywał do druku książkę zbierającą swe dokonania na tym polu. Ich wspólnym mianownikiem miała być teologia polityczna w cesarstwie bizantyńskim. Książkę tę postrzegał jako kontynuację „Dwóch ciał króla”, które stanowiły zwieńczenie jego badań nad teologią polityczną w świecie zachodnim. Śmierć uniemożliwiła dokończenie tego projektu, jednak niepublikowane wykłady konferencyjne oraz studia ogłoszone na łamach „Dubarton Oaks Papers” pozwalają wyrobić sobie pojęcie na temat Kantorowiczowskiego ujęcia teologii politycznej w Bizancjum. W artykule podejmuje próbę wstępnej rekonstrukcji wkładu Kantorowicza w rozumienie teologii politycznej, czy raczej politycznej chrystologii, w Cesarstwie Bizantyńskim.

“…Cette description, qui figure dans le livret officiel du sacre de Louis XVI, en reprend mot par mot une autre publiée plus de cinquante ans plus tôt à l'occasion de l'inauguration du règne de Louis XV. C'est alors que pour la première fois le curieux rite de pré-couronnement avait été explicitement associé au symbolisme solaire par allusion à une autre cérémonie, celle du lever du roi qui commençait les journées de Louis XIV à Versailles 17 . Le développement du symbolisme solaire permettait de libérer ce rite énigmatique de la signification dont il avait pu être investi à l'origine.…”

Parmi les nombreux thèmes qui permettent d'étudier la royauté comme système symbolique de représentation du pouvoir, le sacre est sans doute celui qui retient le plus la curiosité de l'historien. Réalité polymorphe et complexe, le sacre se prévaut d'une gamme d'attributs si riche qu'il apparaît comme un objet d'analyse idéal.Repris au début de chaque règne tout au long de l'histoire plus que millénaire de la monarchie française, le rituel de l'onction et du couronnement paraît avoir défié le temps, tout en ne cessant de se modifier. Figure obligée dans la tradition immémoriale de la royauté dont il a fini par devenir synonyme, le sacre connaît pourtant et l'innovation et les transformations. Depuis les origines carolingiennes, il est considéré comme l'acte qui confère au roi la grâce divine, légitimant ainsi l'usurpation de Pépin le Bref. Pendant le Moyen Age, lorsque le rite de l'onction est associé à celui du couronnement, le sacre devient la synthèse d'une double légitimation, l'une transcendante, l'autre fondée sur la reconnaissance des hommes.
