Oral Curcumin Supplementation in Patients with Atopic Asthma

Abstract: Oral curcumin is recognized to have anti-inflammatory properties and has been used by ancient traditional medicine for centuries to treat a variety of diseases. In vitro studies have confirmed the ability of curcumin to inhibit allergic inflammatory cytokine responses from lymphocytes; however, there are no in vivo studies of curcumin to treat inflammation associated with allergic asthma. This study was designed to determine the effect of oral curcumin supplementation on patients with stable, persistent, atopi… Show more

“…Treatment with CUR (1000 mg, twice daily supplementation) did not significantly affect post-bronchodilator forced expiratory volume in 1 s, asthma control test scores, use of rescue bronchodilator, inhaled corticosteroid use, exhaled NO, serum IgE, total WBC count, and specific IgE to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus or Dermatophagoides farinae (Der p or Der f), and blood eosinophils in patients with persistent atopic asthma. 96 In patients with anterior uveitis in a clinical trial of 32 patients, CUR at a dose of 375 mg three times/day for 12 weeks improved anterior uveitis after 2 weeks of treatment. 97 In eight patients with idiopathic orbital inflammatory pseudotumor, therapy with CUR, 375 mg three times daily for 6-22 months, lead to complete remission of the symptoms.…”

“…The major obstacle for the clinical use of curcuminoids is its limited bioavailability due to poor absorption and rapid metabolism. This limited bioavailability is a plausible explanation for the lack of efficacy of curcumin in a previous trial among patients with atopic asthma [70]. To meet the bioavailability problem, several approaches have been applied.…”

“…In a clinical trial, curcumin supplementation (1000 mg twice a day) in atopic asthmatic patients has no significant effect on FEV1, serum immunoglobulin E, dose of bronchodilator consumption, and asthma control in comparison to placebo [26].…”
