The incidence of oral cancer is rising in the Sudan. Detecting oral cancer at an early stage is the most effective means of improving survival and reducing morbidity from disease. Aim:The aim of the present study was to determine the knowledge, attitude and practice of dentists related to oral cancer prevention and early detection in public dental clinics in Khartoum State, Sudan. Materials and Methods:A cross-sectional survey using an administered structured questionnaire was carried out. The questionnaire consisted of 28 questions that included the key areas of oral cancer prevention and early detection. A sample of 130 dental practitioners was requested to participate in the study. Results:The response rate was 86.92%. The majority were female (68.1%) between the ages of 20 -40 years old. The majority were aware of the major risk factors and the most common presentations of oral cancer. About two thirds (63.7%) perceived that their knowledge on oral cancer was current. However, almost a third (35.4.6%) reported that they had sufficient knowledge concerning oral cancer prevention. More than half (54 percent) reported that they do not carry out any special examination to detect oral cancer in asymptomatic patients. Two thirds (66.3%) believed that their undergraduate training in the diagnosis of oral cancer was inadequate. The vast majority (95.6%) were interested in further oral cancer continuing education and 88.5% that development of referral guidelines can improve the quality of referrals to specialists. Conclusions:The findings of the present study indicate that there is a need for further training in the early detection and prevention of oral cancer, as well as an increased emphasis on oral cancer diagnosis and prevention in the dental training curriculum.3 Declaration I, the undersigned, hereby declare that the work contained in this dissertation is my original work and that it has not been previously in its entirety or in part submitted at any university for a degree.………………………………… …………………………

Background: Oral and oropharyngeal cancer are significant health problems. They are both life-threatening conditions usually diagnosed at an advanced stage causing survival rates to decline.Aim: To assess and compare practices, knowledge and attitude regarding oral and oropharyngeal cancer between dental and medical practitioners. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted to assess knowledge, attitude and practices of oral and oropharyngeal cancer among dental and medical practitioners at King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. 360 participants were included in the study using a convenient sampling technique. Participants were approached in their clinics and printed self-administered questionnaire were handed over to them after signing a written consent form. Frequency distribution and Chi-Square test were used for the statistical analysis and the level of significance was set at P value of .05 or less.Results: A total of 174 participants responded. Assessment of oral and oropharyngeal cancer knowledge between dental practitioners and medical practitioners showed comparable results. Regarding practices, a significant difference was seen between medical practitioners and dental practitioners in determining the duration of intraoral ulcer to consider urgent referral (P = .006) and in number of referrals made in relation to suspicious oral lesions (P = .002). Moreover, a significant difference (P = .006) was seen between medical practitioners and dental practitioners in determining the duration of intra-oral ulcer to consider urgent referral. Conclusion:Medical and dental practitioners showed areas of differences in practice, attitude and knowledge of oral and oropharyngeal cancer that when addressed would lead to improved survival rates.

Oral‐cancer knowledge, practice, and attitude assessment of dentists in Upper Egypt: A cross‐sectional study

The aims of this study were to investigate the knowledge, attitude, and practice of dentists in Upper Egypt with regard to oral cancer (OC). Out of 1,200 licensed dental practitioners list, 424 dentists were randomly selected from three governorates in Upper Egypt (Minia, Assuit, and Sohag). The sample size was calculated using the equation considering the knowledge of dentists about OC, confidence level, and margins of error; then, an additional number of dentists were added to guard against nonresponse. Data were collected by face‐to‐face interview using 44 items divided into four sections; first part demonstrates sociodemographic. The second part concerned with the knowledge about OC clinical presentation and diagnosis (12 multiple‐choice questions) as well as its risk factors (17 close‐end questions). The third part consists of six questions focused on the practice of participants, and finally, the last part measures attitude of dentists. The chi‐square test was used to compare between the two or more proportions. A correlation was used for describing the relationship or association between two mutually numerical dependent variables. p < 0.05 was considered to indicate significance. Rate of response was 94.3%. The overall knowledge level in the current study was 31.8%. The awareness about OC risk factors was high especially, smoking tobacco and alcohol consumption. Also, over 80% of dentists identified family history and human papillomavirus (HPV) as risk factors. Only 37.5% of participants performed regular screening of oral mucosa, and 26.5% reported lymph‐node examination. Regarding attitude, only one quarter of dentists attended continuing educating programs about OC. A statistically significant relation ( p < 0.0001) between knowledge level and most demographic variables was detected. There was a fair positive correlation ( r = 0.47) between practice and knowledge scores. A predominant trouble among dentists in Upper Egypt was regarding OC knowledge and practice. Continues education and training programs are highly recommended.
