Optimum slippage dependent, non-geodesic fiber path determination for a filament wound composite nozzle

Abstract: One of the main advantages of the filament winding (FW) process is the optimized fiber deposition, even though it is limited by the kinematics of the process and mandrel geometry. The determination of the optimum fiber path is a key challenge in the design of the FW process. In this work, the fiber path for composite nozzles is determined to seek the improvement of specific mechanical properties. The path determination follows differential geometry definitions and the shell internal stresses are calculated via… Show more

“…Composite prepreg tape winding-a process utilized to fabricate revolving body composite structures-is recognized as an effective method for producing aerospace products, such as solid rocket motor nozzles, satellite fairings and missile noses [7][8][9]. The winding process can be described as the prepreg tapes' hoop winding process designed to fabricate the rotary body composite [10,11]. Under the pressure and heating of compaction roller, the tensioned prepreg tapes are steadily wound around the mandrel rotating at a constant speed.…”

“…The second way was to laminate an additional circumferential layer of composite on the core during the braiding process or filament winding (FW). Filament winding is a widely used manufacturing technology to produce axisymmetric structures such as pressure vessels, pipes and tubes [17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25]. Braiding is a widely investigated process in various applications [26][27][28].…”
