Optimizing Macronutrients in People with Diabetes

Abstract: Diverse dietary practices and nutritional counseling strategies are followed in the management of diabetes and its comorbidities. The dietary approaches practiced in India make use of calorie and nutrient counting to ensure patient-centered nutrition therapy in diabetes management. Macronutrient modulation is a central pillar of patient-centered medical nutrition therapy (MNT). Carbohydrates (CHO) are considered as the predominant macronutrient affecting postprandial blood glucose levels. The insulin-to-CHO ra… Show more

“…Another RCT conducted by Jönsson et al 32 has shown that the Palaeolithic diet resulted in greater satiety quotients for energy per meal (p=0.004), energy density per meal (p=0.01) and glycaemic load per meal (p=0.02) among subjects with T2DM with negative effect with respect to compliance. Along with the above mentioned benefits implicated among obese patients with T2DM, a study by Masharani et al 21 also showed a marked decline in fructosamine and triglyceride values among the same group.…”

“…2 Recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for macronutrients are similar among people with and without diabetes. 3 A balanced diet with proper distribution of calories with adequate quality and quantity of dietary carbohydrate (CHO), protein, fat, and micronutrient intake is advised for the optimum management of blood glucose levels and balancing insulin levels in the body. To the best of our knowledge, no studies indicating macronutrient intake pattern amongst the diabetic people has been reported from Rural Gujarat.…”

“…The Dietary Guidelines Development Process x Urgent solutions for reducing or even reversing this trend are needed, especially from investment in modifiable factors, including diet, physical activity, and body weight management (Gupta et al, 2018). Strategies for managing nutrition-related chronic disease conditions are usually multidimensional, involving mainly nutritional and/or dietary interventions, regular physical activity, and lifestyle modifications.…”
