Every radio frequency (RF) design, after its implantation, should be regularly evaluated. The kernel of this article is to evaluate the performance of four GSM networks, taking its received signal quality (RxQual) into consideration. A total of 10501, 10140, 10415 and 10690 RxQual measurements were obtained for MTN, 9mobile, Airtel and Globacom network. These generated data were subjected to statistical analysis in the form of bar charts, quality plots and calculations of measures of central tendency and dispersion. Result shows that 78.43%, 92.18%, 90.68% and 86.93% of the drive test route for MTN, 9mobile, Airtel and Globacom network had good signal quality and met with the Nigerian telecommunication regulatory benchmark of at least 4dB for RxQual. It is therefore deduced that in terms of RxQual, 9mobile was the best GSM network, followed by Airtel network, Globacom network and then MTN network. The result provided in this article will help mobile network operators to improve signal quality, ensure improved network coverage and increase network capacity in the future.

Tuberculosis is an infectious, contagious, and bacterial disease of immense economic and public health importance globally. It affects domestic and wild animals and man causing respirato-ry disease and to a certain extent, generalized body lesions depending on the mode of transmission and the animal species affected including man. Mycobacterium species causing the disease include M. bovis, M. tuberculosis, M. africanum, M. avium, M. caprae, M. microti, and M. canetti. Mycobacterium bovis has been reported to primarily infect cattle while M. tuberculosis infects humans though the organisms M. bovis and M. tuberculosis have recently been demonstrated in both cattle and humans. The objective of this study was to review relevant literature and provide concise summary on the epidemiology of tuberculosis in animals and humans with special emphasis on Nigeria. Factors that affect the epidemiology of tuberculosis such as the age, breed, sex and genetic composition of the host as well as season, husbandry and management practices were adequately discussed. The role of wild life in the maintenance of tuberculosis in the population as well as the role of immunosuppression in humans have all been identified. The infection of humans with HIV/AIDs has been shown to greatly increase the incidence of the disease in humans and that the disease has been reported in almost all the states in the Nigerian Federation. The epidemiological and risk factors of the disease, tuberculosis, along with the potential economic and public health importance of the disease in various animal species in Nigeria have been demonstrated.

Occurrence of Listeria monocytogenes in Camel Milk Cheese from two township markets of Borno and Kano States, Nigeria

Introduction: Camel milk cheese is one of the major camel milk products consumed in Northern Nige-ria. The conditions in which the cheese is sold in markets pose a risk of cross-contamination with foodborne pathogens such as Listeria monocytogenes. The study was carried out to evaluate the microbial quality of raw camel milk cheese sold in two different markets. Methods: A total of 200 cheese samples, (100 samples from each market) of Kano and Borno States, of Northern Nigeria were analysed for total aerobic plate count (TAPC) and total coliform count (TCC). Listeria species were isolated from the samples and the isolates were subjected for antimicrobial susceptibility test with commonly used antibiotics. Results: The results of the study show that mean TAPC of the sampled cheese was 5.90 log10 cfu/g and 5.70 log10 cfu/g for the Kano and Borno markets, respectively. While the mean for TCC per gram sampled was 3.75 log10 cfu/g and 3.81 log10 cfu/g for Kano and Borno, respectively. The occurrence rate of Listeria monocytogenes was 1(0.5%) in Kano and none in Borno market. However other Listeria species were isolated in both markets with overall occurrence rate of L. ivanovii 6(3%), L. welshimeri 1(0.5%) and L. grayi 2 (1%). The results of antimicrobial susceptibility test of the isolates show resistance of 77.7%, 66.7% and 55.6% to penicillin, gentamicin and tetracycline, respectively while 66.7% of the isolates were susceptible to erythromycin. Significance: This study has demonstrated the need for food regulatory agency to carry out routine investigation of ready to eat foods sold in the market to ascertain safety of such food for human consumption.
