Quality of Service Reliability: A Study of Received Signal Quality in GSM Networks

Abstract: Every radio frequency (RF) design, after its implantation, should be regularly evaluated. The kernel of this article is to evaluate the performance of four GSM networks, taking its received signal quality (RxQual) into consideration. A total of 10501, 10140, 10415 and 10690 RxQual measurements were obtained for MTN, 9mobile, Airtel and Globacom network. These generated data were subjected to statistical analysis in the form of bar charts, quality plots and calculations of measures of central tendency and dispe… Show more

“…One of the most significant KPIs used by all mobile operators is the Call Setup Success Rate; however, since there is no standard way to measure this parameter, different operators may use different approaches. The real challenge lies in successfully optimizing the BTS coverage area in addition to providing better service [13,17]. According to [18] most networks issues arise from growing subscriber numbers and changing environmental conditions because of subscriber mobility and the intricacy of radio wave propagation.…”

“…Path loss models provide a standardized approach to calculate the attenuation of radio waves in a specific environment over a given distance. These models take critical factors such as frequency, distance, and environmental obstacles into consideration to evaluate the expected power level at a particular location [12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20]. Such models can be classified into two broad categories: empirical models and theoretical models.…”
