Synthesis of graphene oxide by the modified Hummers method and measuring the synthesis yield were investigated. Based on the results, a comprehensive method to measure graphene oxide synthesis yield was proposed, which will allow comparison of future literature results. In addition, changes are proposed to the exfoliation procedure to improve the yield of the modified Hummers synthesis. With the proposed method, systematic error of the concentration measurement was calculated to be §0.08 £ 10 ¡3 g mL ¡1 . In addition, changes proposed to the graphene oxide exfoliation process can improve the synthesis yield by up to 70%.

This study investigated the preparation of graphene oxide from mildly oxidized graphite through ultrasonic exfoliation. Both the original and produced materials were analyzed by ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer, X-ray di®raction and atomic force microscopy. The results indicated that the exfoliation yield of graphene oxide was proportional to the input ultrasonic energy. In addition, a two-stage exfoliation phenomenon was observed in the exfoliation of mildly oxidized graphite with both ultrasonic homogenizer and cleaner. It also was found that increasing the content of [O] in a C-H 2 SO 4 -[O] reaction system was the most simple and direct method to increase the oxidation degree of graphite oxide.

Zirconia Reduced Graphene Oxide Nano-Hybrid Structure Fabricated by the Hydrothermal Reaction Method

In this work, we report an available technique for the effective reduction of graphene oxide (GO) and the fabrication of nanostructured zirconia reduced graphene oxide powder via a hydrothermal method. Characterization of the obtained nano-hybrid structure materials was carried out using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The confirmation that GO was reduced and the uniform distribution of zirconia nanoparticles on graphene oxide sheets during synthesis was obtained due to these techniques. This has presented new opportunities and prospects to use this uncomplicated and inexpensive technique for the development of zirconia/graphene nanocomposite powders.
