Measuring Synthesis Yield in Graphene Oxide Synthesis by Modified Hummers Method

Abstract: Synthesis of graphene oxide by the modified Hummers method and measuring the synthesis yield were investigated. Based on the results, a comprehensive method to measure graphene oxide synthesis yield was proposed, which will allow comparison of future literature results. In addition, changes are proposed to the exfoliation procedure to improve the yield of the modified Hummers synthesis. With the proposed method, systematic error of the concentration measurement was calculated to be §0.08 £ 10 ¡3 g mL ¡1 . In a… Show more

“…The main advantages of the reported method is does not produce the toxic gas i. e. NO 2 and N 2 O 4 , simplifies the wastewater disposal and hence it decreases the cost of production. Frankberg et al . synthesized graphene oxide using modified Hummer's methods from graphite powder.…”

“…The GO dispersion had a pH ~ 6.5 and the achieved concentration 117 ± 10 mg/mL was higher than the yield achieved by Jasim et al (2016) and Ali-Boucetta et al (2013) although lower than Frankberg et al (2015). This variation depends on the source of graphite used to synthesise GO (Jasim et al 2016) and oxidation time (Huang et al 2011).…”

“…The obtained GO suspension was further centrifuged at 8000 r min −1 , during which GO can be further exfoliated in water and GO suspension was divided into three layers. 25 The supernatant was removed and the sediment was allowed to disperse in DI water followed by centrifuged. This process was repeated for several cycles and the interlayer GO slurry was collected.…”
