Optimization of Electrodeposit Uniformity by the Use of Auxiliary Electrodes

Abstract: A numerical model is used to examine how the uniformity of current distribution at a flat electrode can be improved using a coplanar auxiliary electrode. A boundary-element code, based on potentialtheory and Tafel kinetics, determines the current that must be passed at a surrounding auxiliary electrode to minimize nonuniformity on a round cathode. Nonuniformity is quantified by the root-mean-square deviation from the mean current density over the cathode surface. The importance of geometric factors such as the… Show more

“…To improve the current density distribution over the surface area of the substrate, an auxiliary cathode (or current thief) was constructed. 37 Copper wire of 0.4 mm diameter was electrically connected to the substrate and positioned around its perimeter at a constant offset distance of 1 mm. Note that the full exposed area of the substrate and the thief were taken into account when calculating the applied current necessary to obtain the current density waveform illustrated previously in Fig.…”

“…1. For analysis of current distribution on cathode in the present study, the model given by Mehdizadeh et al [4][5][6] which can take account of the auxiliary electrode, electrode patterning, and mass transfer was adopted. The potential É in electrochemical cell obeys the Laplace equation Here s and c are the concentration and surface overpotentials, respectively.…”
