Optimisation of supercritical CO2 extraction of grape seed oil using response surface methodology

Abstract: Summary The aim of this study was to use waste from the wine production process with special accent on grape seeds and new green technology. Supercritical CO2 was considered as a green solvent in extraction of grape seed oil. The effects of different extraction process parameters on oil yield and antioxidant activity were investigated. Extraction optimisation was conducted using response surface methodology (RSM). Extraction pressure has proven to be the most significant factor influencing oil yield and antiox… Show more

“…[21,23,24] There are some variations in chemical profile of grape seed oil among different vine varieties mainly regarding UFA and SFA contents. For example, Yu and Ahmedna [25] reported that the content of UFA in varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Royal Rouge ranged from 61 to 64 %, while Jokić et al [22] in variety Cabernet Franc detected 75 % of linoleic acid and 12 % of oleic acid. Our results showed that Prokupac clone 43/3 was the most abundant in UFA (95 %) and at the same time possess the lowest percentage of SFA (5 %), while in the clones 41/1 and 43/5 the lowest percentage of UFA (87 %) and the highest content of SFA (13 %) were determined.…”

“…Depending on the grape variety, method of the oil extraction and environmental conditions, the oil content could be very different, but in the most cases it is between 1.35 and 22 %. [20][21][22] Nine fatty acid methyl esters were observed in the chromatograms and they were identified by comparing their mass spectra and retention indices with those obtained from authentic samples and listed in the NIST and Wiley spectra libraries ( Table 3). The relative abundance of the fatty acid methyl esters was calculated from their signal intensities in the GC/FID traces, and expressed as area percent.…”

“…Molero Gómez et al [31] compared the supercritical extraction and the non-supercritical one using CO 2 as extraction agent, showing a great increment on oil yield by working at supercritical conditions. Jokić et al [32] determined that the optimal conditions for obtaining the highest oil yield (14.49%) and antioxidant activity using supercritical CO 2 as extracting agent were 400 bar and 41°C. Fiori [33] determined a break-even value of grape seed oil obtained at 550 bar and 60°C of 5.9 €/kg using the same technology.…”
