Optical mm‐wave generation based on phase modulation along with optical filtering

Abstract: We have investigated the generation and transmission of optical millimeter (mm)‐wave signal based on optical phase modulator (PM) and fiber Bragg grating (FBG) filter. With an optimized modulation depth of PM and a higher carrier suppression ratio via a notch filter, the generated optical mm‐wave can be transmitted over a long‐distance without fading. We have also theoretically analyzed the impact of time shift on the eye closure of optical and electrical signal due to the fiber dispersion, which is well in ac… Show more

“…Radio over fiber (RoF) technique, which integrates optical communication with wireless access, has become an attractive solution for the next‐generation wireless networks. It increases the capacity, bandwidth, and convenience for both fixed and mobile users . With the rapid growth of bandwidth demand for all kinds of wireless services, the frequency of radio frequency (RF) carrier is increasing to millimeter wave or higher.…”

“…In order to overcome the problem of the power penalty, the use of single sideband (SSB) modulation has been proposed with a DD-MZM modulator [3]. Though the SSB mm-wave has good ability in anti-noise, the data signals carried by the optical carrier and its sideband will also get distortion because of the group velocity dispersion (GVD) [7] when they are transmitted along the fiber for a further transmission distance.…”

“…A basic RoF system should have a great deal of base stations (BSs) connected with a central office (CO) [4][5][6]. A remote node (RN) in RoF system could distribute the wavelength channels to the capillaries of the access network [7,8].…”
