The purpose of this study is to provide garnet films for volumetric magnetic holography. Volumetric magnetic holography usually employs an easily obtainable short-wavelength laser (visible light, not infrared light) with a large diffraction intensity. Bi-substituted garnet ferrite with a large Faraday rotation is promising for volumetric magnetic holography applications in the visible light region. However, a garnet film without a deteriorated layer must be obtained because a deteriorated layer (minute polycrystalline grains containing an amorphous phase) is formed during the initial deposition on a glass substrate. In particular, the required magnetooptical properties have not been obtained in a thin garnet film (100 nm or less) after annealing (1 h, 700 °C, oxygen atmosphere). Therefore, there is a need for excellent garnet films with the required magnetooptical (MO) properties even if the films are thin. By using a spinel ferrite buffer layer for garnet film deposition, we could obtain a thin garnet film with excellent MO properties. We determined the effect of the initial buffer layer on the crystallinity of the deposited garnet films by observing the film cross section. In addition, we undertook a qualitative estimation of the influence of the crystallinity and optical properties of the garnet film on a glass substrate with a spinel ferrite buffer layer.

A new symbol readout method employing two readout laser beams that intersect at a specified angle on the magnetic medium surface and are orthogonally polarized with respect to each other is proposed. The diffracted light signal is detected in reproducing the FM video signal, that is, it is recorded thermomagnetically on a magnetic film as recording medium (e.g., a rotating disk memory) using magnetooptic effects. The effects of the readout frequency characteristic, and the readout beam defocus are analyzed. The diffracted light of the high‐frequency signal generated by the signal recording track overlaps the zero‐order diffracted light. By adjusting the intersecting angle of the readout laser beams in such a way that sufficient overlapped light is obtained, the higher‐frequency limit of the readout frequency characteristic can be emphasized. Further, in order to obtain flat FM demodulator characteristic, the needed readout frequency characteristic that attenuates linearly in the neighborhood of FM carrier frequency is realized easily by optical means. As a result of greater emphasis on the larger limit the signal‐to‐noise ratio is improved. It is possible to reduce the output of the readout laser light source to less than half, when compared to the conventional magnetooptic readout methods employing a single beam.

Film systems of the sequence silver-silicon oxide-antimony doped manganese-bismuthide-silicon oxide were prepared on glass substrates with the aim of reaching high readout efficiencies for holographically stored information in this magneto-optic medium. The readout efficiency is measured indirectly with a simple device which allows simultaneously the approximate determination of Kerr rotation and ellipticity. The dependence of reflectivity, efficiency, and the Kerr data on the silicon oxide interlayer thickness is determined for MnBil-,Sb, films with a thickness of 300 A and a top layer of optical thickness A/4. The highest readout efficiencies which can be reached with such film combinations are of the order 3 to 4 x That is an improvement of a factor of three compared to the normally used single MnBi films with an antireflection coating.Um moglichst hohe Wirkungsgrade beim Auslesen holografisch gespeicherter Informationen aus niagnetooptischen Medien zu erreichen, wurden Schichtsysteme mit folgenden Komponenten auf Glas aufgebracht : Silber-Siliziumoxid-mit Antimon dotiertes Mangan-Wismut-Siliziumoxid.Der Auslesewirkungsgrad wnrde nach einem einfachen indirekten Verfahren bestimmt, mit dem sich auch Kerr-Drehung und -Elliptizitat niiherungsweise ermitteln lassen. Die Abhgngigkeit des Reflexionskoeffizienten, des Auslesewirkungsgrades und der Kerr-Daten von der Dicke der dielektrisFhen Zwischenschicht wird angegeben, wobei die MnBil-,Sb,-Schicht eine Dicke von 300 A hatte und als Deckschicht eine 1/4-Schicht verwendet wurde. Die hochsten mit derartigen Filmkombinationen erreichbaren Ausleseeffektivitaten liegen bei 3 bis 4 x Das bedeutet eine Verbesserung um einen Faktor drei gegeniiber den iiblicherweise verwendeten MnBi-Schichten mit reflexmindernder Deckschicht. *
