In calculating the area of an area, latitude and longitude coordinates are based on data from Global Administrative Region Database and Google Earth can be used. The aim of this research is to calculate the area. This research uses the Karney and Shoelace method to determine its accuracy based on Median Absolute Percentage Error in calculating the area of an area. Median Absolute Percentage Error results use data based on Global Administration The Regional Database by applying the polygon method proposed by Karney is 18.73%, and the percentage is 18.19% by applying the Shoelace method. Based on Google Earth data, implementation the method proposed by Karney obtained a percentage of 19.14%, and the application of shoelaces method obtained a percentage of 19.72%. In this case, Karney polygons and the Shoelace method has good accuracy because the value is below 20%. The proposed Shoelace method is easier to perform understand compared to the Karney method for calculating land area because it uses the Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system, which projects points on the Earth's surface onto a flat plane.

Determination of hydrographic characteristics on large-scale maps with maximum accuracy requires sufficient time and volume of cartometric work. The current level of geographic information systems (GIS) and computer technologies allows to reduce the volume of cartometric operations. The implementation of calculations of the morphometric characteristics of watercourses, reservoirs, and watersheds in the GIS environment ensures the determination of these properties regardless of the scale of maps, map projection, or distance from the axial meridian of a particular projection zone. This article demonstrates the use of analytical and numerical methods for cartometric and morphometric calculations on the reference ellipsoid. The researched calculation methods determine the geodetic areas of geospatial objects with root mean square errors from 0,030 to 0,809 m2.

This study proposes the use of the shoelace formula to determine the area of the regencies and towns/cities in the province of Central Java, which is based on the boundaries of the cities, regencies, (sub-) districts, and villages using the database from the GADM (Global Administrative Area). The results obtained are then compared with the Karney polygon method. With the shoelace formula, the area of Central Java province is 34365.40 km2 (4.77% wider than the reference area), while the Karney polygon method yields 34379.48 km2 (4.81% wider than the reference area). The area calculated using the boundaries of sub-districts is closer to the reference area if compared to using the boundaries of the regencies/cities and of villages. MdAPE values of 6.46 % and 6.54 % are obtained using the shoelace formula and the Karney polygon method respectively.
