Ontology change: classification and survey

Abstract: Ontologies play a key role in the advent of the Semantic Web. An important problem when dealing with ontologies is the modification of an existing ontology in response to a certain need for change. This problem is a complex and multifaceted one, because it can take several different forms and includes several related subproblems, like heterogeneity resolution or keeping track of ontology versions. As a result, it is being addressed by several different, but closely related and often overlapping research discip… Show more

“…Then CMIs were generated -638 CMIs were detected for AMA (357 nonredundant), and 460 CMIs for NCI-A (234 non-redundant). In total 145 new CMIs were detected for AMA -120 were validated as missing and 25 validated as wrong 6 . 103 new CMIs were detected for NCI-A -53 were validated as missing and 50 as wrong.…”

“…Most of it aims at identifying and removing logical contradictions from an ontology. Standard reasoners are used to identify the existence of a contradiction, and provide support for resolving and eliminating it [6]. In [24] minimal sets of axioms are identified which need to be removed to render an ontology coherent.…”

“…After establishing the ontology, an important issue is that ontology tends to change and evolve over time due to changes in the domain, changes in conceptualization, or changes in the explicit specification [12]. Works in managing ontology change and evolution are well-summarized in [13]. Canonicalization has been studied in several works.…”

“…In recent years a ramp-up could be observed due to Semantic Web research activity, thus providing a more user-centric view on ontology evolution. A comprehensive overview on the field of ontology change is given in [4]. The authors conduct an extensive literature review, extracting and defining common vocabulary as a base for discussion.…”
