Plant-pollinator interactions and their reproductive implications are of central importance to the organization of plant populations and communities in restoration areas. We studied the breeding system and flower visitors of Pleroma trichopodum, a pioneer species of the Atlantic Forest. We attempted to answer three questions: (1) Is P. trichopodum dependent on pollinators and mates for reproduction? (2) What are the pollinators of P. trichopodum? (3) Do tree flower-density and flowering-tree density of P. trichopodum enhance the visitation rate of focal trees and their flowers? We tested the breeding system through pollination treatments. We performed focal observations on 10 trees and analyzed the relationship between tree and flower visitation rates, and the tree flower-density and flowering-tree density with Generalized Linear Mixed Models (GLMM). Pleroma trichopodum sets fruits by selfing and outcrossing, both of which occur only through pollinator visits. Bees visited P. trichopodum, and their visitation increased with tree flower-density. Thus, individuals with greater floral displays may function as magnet species, enhancing the pollination of nearby plant species. This characteristic, allied with the ability to reproduce without a mate (selfing) and a tolerance of soggy soils, make P. trichopodum a candidate for Atlantic Forest restoration.

The restoration concept in the scientific literature and in the Brazilian lawWhat environmental problem is the focus of this work? Ambiguities in the "restoration" concept can impair the planning of the goals and techniques for implementation and monitoring of restoration projects for degraded areas.What was the strategy of the work to help solving the problem? We evaluated the meanings and contexts of use ascribed to the term "restoration" and its correlates in the scientific literature and in Brazilian law. What is the main conclusion of the work? "Restoration" is a mandatory practice, which meets the Brazilian Constitution for repairing environmental damages. However, Brazilian legal concept of "restoration" is different from the legal concept of "recovery", which is more flexible in its goals and is the mandatory activity in specific laws, such as the new Brazilian Forest Act. Aggregating knowledge about natural systems dynamics to the practice of environmental managers can help to incorporate restoration as the adequate recovery practice when you want to maintain natural systems and ecosystems services.Key-words: restoration; conservation; biodiversity; natural systems dynamics; environmental law. DOI: 10.7724/caititu.2013.v1.n1.d04 Introdução Ambiguidades no entendimento do que significa "restauração" podem gerar problemas na concepção de projetos de restauração de áreas degradadas, refletindo-se nos objetivos REVISTA CAITITU Nery et al -O conceito de restauração 44 elegidos, nas técnicas utilizadas, no monitoramento das ações e, consequentemente, no produto resultante de tais projetos.A tentativa de solucionar questões práticas, tais como a restauração de habitats degradados, está intimamente ligada à qualidade das bases teóricas utilizadas nessa tarefa. Eventualmente é necessário superar limitações nas bases teóricas para se alcançar maior sucesso nessa tentativa. Como argumentam Pickett e colaboradores (2007), definir explicitamente os conceitos básicos usados na formulação de qualquer problema de pesquisa (ou, podemos acrescentar, aplicado), de natureza ecológica ou não, aumenta as possibilidades de obtenção de sucesso na sua resolução. Além disso, esse procedimento amplia o sucesso da comparação dos resultados obtidos com outras ações semelhantes e facilita a produção de generalizações sobre as estratégias usadas. Assim, na medida em que prática e teoria se codeterminam, a dicotomia entre elas não passa de uma quimera. O sucesso de uma prática que busca a restauração de algum sistema natural, por exemplo, está evidentemente atrelado não apenas às técnicas utilizadas para restaurar, mas à compreensão do que seja "restauração" e de como tal significado se relaciona à obtenção de informações que permitam avaliar se a restauração foi conseguida ou não.Após um distúrbio que altere as características originais de um sistema natural, como o fogo, desmatamento, furacões etc., o sistema pode apresentar um processo de regeneração natural, com a recuperação da cobertura vegetal, retorno das espécies de animai...

RESUMO -O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o crescimento de espécies florestais nativas mediante a utilização de diferentes métodos de restauração florestal e submetidas a diferentes técnicas de manutenção, em uma Mata de Tabuleiros. O experimento foi instalado em agosto de 2007, na Reserva Natural Vale (RNV), Linhares, ES, em blocos casualizados que consistiram em quatro tratamentos e três repetições, sendo: T1 (Controle) controle de formigas-cortadeiras; T2 capina química seletiva e controle de formigas e das espécies tolerantes ao herbicida; T3 Idem ao T2 + plantio de 14 espécies pioneiras da Mata Atlântica (espaçamento: 5 x 5 m) intercalado com semeio de Sesbania grandiflora em covas; e T4 Idem ao T2 + plantio de 54 espécies da Mata Atlântica (3 x 3 m). Foram medidos e identificados os indivíduos com DAP > a 5 cm, no momento da implantação do experimento e nos três anos posteriores. No terceiro ano, também foi coletado o IAF. As famílias mais ricas em espécies no terceiro ano de estudo foram Fabaceae, Anacardiaceae e Lecythidaceae, sendo somente no T4 observadas espécies nos quatro grupos ecológicos. O maior índice de área foliar foi observado no T3, indicando maior sombreamento da área. O ingresso de número de indivíduos e de área basal foi superior nos T3 e T4, sugerindo maior crescimento da vegetação, em que houve plantio de mudas. De forma geral, a eliminação da matocompetição atuou positivamente no crescimento da vegetação arbórea.Palavras-chave: Mata Atlântica; Crescimento; Grupos funcionais.
