On the normative foundations of marriage and cohabitation: Results from group discussions in eastern and western Germany

Abstract: BACKGROUNDSince the 1960s the inclination to get married has been declining in almost all western industrialised countries. Partnership arrangements have become more diverse and the share of cohabiting couples and nonmarital births has been increasing. Yet there are substantial regional differences in marriage and childbearing patterns, and the differences between eastern and western Germany are especially striking. We assume those differences can be partially explained by social norms and different attitudes … Show more

“…At the same time, it is important to mitigate the risk of labour market uncertainties for the long run since it is necessary for higher employment rates and in consequence it may induce the increase of TFR. In a society where there are contrasts between conventional and alternative behaviors, as was stated by Klärner and Knabe (2017), it is most likely that such conflicts may cause many individuals to repeat traditional patterns and reflect upon traditional models. These explicit implications could be also explained by the fact that demographic transition in Turkey is still incomplete.…”

“…Citing the Giddens' theory of structuration, from 2013, Klärner and Knabe (2017) point out that the reproduction of a society takes place mainly through the certain repeating of traditional behavioral patterns, and modification processes may occur when there are contrasts between conventional and alternative behaviors. These scholars note that such conflicts may cause individuals to reflect upon traditional models.…”

“…Because we also want to investigate respondents who live in a household without a partner, we do not take a couple perspective, but rather analyse male and female individuals separately. We excluded respondents residing in the eastern part of the country (except Berlin) because eastern and western Germans still differ in their partnership behaviors (Klärner and Knabe, 2017 ), and because most immigrants of Turkish origin migrated to western Germany and Berlin and continue to live there (Destatis, 2019d ).…”

“…In post-communist countries like Poland, research results presented by Klärner andKnabe (2017, p. 1637) are relevant: "the harmonization of family laws and policies across Germany after 1990 did not automatically lead to a convergence in the norms and behaviors of the people living in these two regions". Diverse values continue to influence behavioral patterns as a consequence of turbulent socio-economic changes that have triggered a replacement of materialistic values with post-materialistic, postmodern, or individualistic values.…”

“…Diverse values continue to influence behavioral patterns as a consequence of turbulent socio-economic changes that have triggered a replacement of materialistic values with post-materialistic, postmodern, or individualistic values. Therefore, at present, habitual marriage cannot be regarded to be an absolute and evident unit (Klärner & Knabe, 2017, pp. 1640-1641.…”
