On one approach to health protection: Music of the brain

Abstract: This review presents the current status of a method for prevention and timely correction of human functional disturbances that was first proposed by Russian neurologist Ya.I. Levin in 1998 and further developed by the authors. The approach is named "Music of the Brain" and is based on musical or music-like stimulation organized in strict accordance with the biopotentials of a patient's brain. Initial studies on the music of the brain approach were analyzed, and its limitations were noted. To enhance the effici… Show more

“…Music has been used to improve various neurological conditions. Recently, biofeedback using sonification has been shown to be effective and is attracting a growing attention (Bergstrom et al, 2014 ; Brancatisano et al, 2020 ; Fedotchev et al, 2018 ; Maes et al, 2016 ). However, there are only a limited number of studies reporting that combining such music therapy and alpha neurofeedback has neuroprotective effect (Alexander, 2018 ; Nawaz et al, 2018 ; Ramirez et al, 2015 ).…”

“…This technology is based on the feedback signals from the individual bioelectric characteristics of a patient; the method provides highly personalized information that can be used in planning the therapeutic strategy. We have already reported on using the neurointerface technologies to activate cognitive functions [101], for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity syndrome [102], and for suppressing stress-induced disorders [103]. We tend to believe that the brain-computer interface and neurofeedback technologies can also be successfully used in the treatment of epilepsy.…”

“…By EEG oscillator of a patient is meant the narrow-frequency part of the subject's EEG that is meaningful and significant to him. An original method of EEG processing has been developed to reveal the EEG oscillators of the subject [33]. The method employs a fast Fourier transform procedure on short (4-5 s) periods of background EEG recordings that are sequentially shifted relative to each other with a 50% overlap.…”
