Human Body Rhythms in the Development of Non-Invasive Methods of Closed-Loop Adaptive Neurostimulation

Abstract: The creation and improvement of non-invasive closed-loop brain stimulation technologies represent an exciting and rapidly expanding field of neuroscience. To identify the appropriate way to close the feedback loop in adaptive neurostimulation procedures, it was previously proposed to use on-line automatic sensory stimulation with the parameters modulated by the patient’s own rhythmical processes, such as respiratory rate, heart rate, and electroencephalogram (EEG) rhythms. The current paper aims to analyze sev… Show more

“…The closed-loop system can effectively combine the time-domain result parameters with the space-domain result parameters and adjust the parameter combination (intensity, frequency, and electrode position) of the stimulation system in real time to achieve accurate neuromodulation. In the noninvasive field, closed-loop transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and EEG have been used to explore personalized cognitive training and rehabilitation technology and limb function recovery after stroke [ 117 , 118 ]. The closed-loop neural control system enables the selection of the best control strategy and the simultaneous optimization of the input stimulation and output effect with its adaptive control process and visualization of the control effect.…”

“…Closed-loop systems are designed to continuously monitor a patient's brain activity and adjust stimulation parameters accordingly, thus potentially providing personalized therapy that is both efficient and automatic [35]. Compared to traditional openloop methods, closed-loop neurostimulation may significantly enhance clinical outcomes, reduce side effects, and boost overall efficacy [36,37]. For example, the feasibility of a closedloop system was demonstrated in a proof-of-concept study involving six healthy subjects, considering the power distribution of the electroencephalogram (EEG) spectrum [38].…”
