Purpose: Cytokines and hormones derived from adipose tissue are implicated in bone metabolism and atherogenesis. There is little data on the relationship between serum omentin-1 and vascular disease. We aimed to investigate the relationship between levels of serum omentin-1 and bone profile parameters in Saudi postmenopausal females with and without subclinical atherosclerosis.Methods: 126 postmenopausal women were recruited from the King Abdulaziz University Hospital in a casecontrol study design. Measurements were made of clinical biomarkers, including carotid intima: media thickness (CIMT) for all subjects.Results: Serum omentin-1 levels were higher amongst postmenopausal women with subclinical carotid atherosclerosis than their age-matched controls (p<0.05). Only body weight and mean CIMT were shown to be independent predictors of serum omentin-1 levels by explaining 10.6% of the total variance according to the multiple regression model. Conclusion:Serum omentin-1 levels are higher in postmenopausal women with evidence of early carotid atherosclerosis as assessed by CIMT and negatively associated with body weight.

Background and aim: Omentin-1 is suggested to affect inversely atherosclerosis (AS). Data about omentin-1 is limited to chronic kidney disease (CKD). Our aim was to examine omentin-1 in non-diabetic CKD patients who are not dialyzed and investigate its relationships with inflammation and carotid AS. Materials and Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study in 55 non-diabetic CKD patients and 30 healthy controls. Baseline clinical and laboratory data were obtained for all participants. Serum omentin-1 and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels were measured according to the manufacturer's instructions. Carotic plaque and intima-media thickness (IMT) were assessed by carotid ultrasonography. The homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) was used to assess IR. Results: Omentin-1 and IL-6 levels in the patient group were found to be higher than the control group; the differences were statistically significant (p ¼ 0.01 and p ¼ 0.04, respectively). Carotid IMT(mean) was significantly higher in the patient group (p ¼ 0.01). Omentin-1 did not correlate with IL-6 and IMT in the patient group (p ¼ 0.51 and p ¼ 0.76, respectively). In subgroup analysis, omentin-1 levels in patients with carotid plaque were lower than those without carotid plaque (179.5 AE 88.1 ng/ml and 185.9 AE 67.8 ng/ml, respectively). However, the difference was not statistically significant (p ¼ 0.47). Conclusion: We conclude that omentin-1 is higher in not dialyzed non-diabetic CKD and there is no correlation between omentin-1 and IL-6 or carotid IMT(mean).

Obesity is causally linked with the development of atherosclerosis. Omentin is an adipocytokine whose concentrations are reduced in obese individuals. Here we examined the relationship between plasma omentin levels and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), a marker of early atherosclerosis, in apparently healthy Japanese men. Participants were 100 Japanese men who underwent a medical checkup. Maximal IMT (max-IMT) and mean-IMT in common carotid artery were measured by highresolution carotid ultrasound system. Plasma omentin concentrations were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Circulating omentin levels correlated negatively with body mass index, waist circumference, fasting glucose, creatinine, max-IMT and mean-IMT, and positively with estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFR). Single regression analysis demonstrated that max-IMT associated with age, eGFR and omentin levels, and that mean-IMT associated with age, fasting glucose, eGFR and omentin levels. Multiple regression analysis revealed that omentin levels, together with age, correlated with max-IMT and mean-IMT. Our data document that circulating omentin levels independently and negatively associate with carotid IMT in this population, suggesting that measurement of omentin may be useful for assessment of carotid IMT.
