Serum omentin-1, inflammation and carotid atherosclerosis in patients with non-diabetic chronic kidney disease

Abstract: Background and aim: Omentin-1 is suggested to affect inversely atherosclerosis (AS). Data about omentin-1 is limited to chronic kidney disease (CKD). Our aim was to examine omentin-1 in non-diabetic CKD patients who are not dialyzed and investigate its relationships with inflammation and carotid AS. Materials and Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study in 55 non-diabetic CKD patients and 30 healthy controls. Baseline clinical and laboratory data were obtained for all participants. Serum omentin-1 and int… Show more

“…Until now, only a few studies have reported associations between omentin and subclinical atherosclerosis (e.g. carotid atherosclerosis) [ 12 , 25 ]. However, little information is available with respect to the associations of serum omentin levels and diabetic microvascular complications.…”

“…Serum omentin levels also are negatively correlated with BMI, metabolic risk factors and inflammatory markers, and positively correlated with serum adiponectin and high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) levels [ 8 11 ]. However, contradictory results also have been reported regarding the association of serum omentin with the above-mentioned metabolic risk factors [ 12 , 13 ].…”

“…More specifically, it is expressed in visceral adipose stromal vascular cells, rather than in subcutaneous adipose tissue 9 . Accumulating evidence indicates that the obese state is characterized by chronic low-grade inflammation and adipose tissue dysfunction, which leads to the initiation and progression of obesity-related disorders, such as T2DM, hypertension, and atherosclerosis 18 . We found in the present study, circulating omentin levels were lower in IGR group compared with NGT and were lowest in individuals with T2DM group.…”

“…Omentyna, jak opisano w piśmiennictwie, odgrywa w organizmie rolę przeciwzapalną [9][10][11]. Funkcja przeciwzapalna wiąże się z oddziaływaniem na szereg wewnątrzkomórkowych kaskad sygnalizacyjnych.…”

“…As the literature suggests, omentin has an anti-inflammatory role in the body [9][10][11]. The anti-inflammatory function is associated with its impact on a range of intracellular signal cascades.…”
