Oil Spill Detection and Mapping Using Sentinel 2 Imagery

Abstract: Two object-based image analysis methods are developed for detecting oil spills from known natural outflows as well as light oil spill events using Sentinel 2 imagery. The methods are applied to Sentinel 2 images of a known area of natural oil outflow as well as on a Sentinel 2 image of a recent oil spill event along the south coast of Athens, Greece. The preliminary results are considered very successful and consistent, with a high degree of applicability to other Sentinel 2 satellite images. Further testing a… Show more

“…This research used satellite data and in-situ data to obtain oil spill visualization and the reflectance for each band. Sentinel-2 was used as satellite data because Sentinel-2 imagery provided more consistent results to detect oil spills using OBIA methods with a high degree of capability (Kolokoussis & Karathanassi, 2018). Another advantage of Sentinel-2 is it provides spatial resolution at 10 m. It is relatively high compared to other medium-resolution satellite imagery, such as Landsat-8 at 30 m. As Sentinel-2 is a multispectral satellite, it has 13 bands with different wavelengths in each band.…”

“…Remote sensing technology has the ability to perform oil spill detection quickly, effectively, and in vast areas. Remote sensing has several sensors that can be used to detect oil spills, including synthetic aperture radar (SAR) (Fan et al, 2010;Sulma et al, 2019) and optical remote sensing includes multispectral (Kolokoussis & Karathanassi, 2018), hyperspectral (Lu et al, 2014), thermal infrared (Fingas & Brown, 1997) to multi-angular (Chust & Sagarminaga, 2007) and combination between SAR and optical (Setiani & Ramdani, 2019).…”

“…Garcia-Pineda et al [209] used SAR imagery from multiple sensors to detect oil near shorelines during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Kolokoussis and Karathanassi [210] presented a method for detecting oil spills from known natural outflows and minor spills from Sentinel-2 imagery.…”

“…To prevent a broader impact of oil spreading, nowadays experts use satellite images on small to large scale cases (Bayramov et al 2018;Brekke & Solberg 2005;Fiscella et al 2000;Kolokoussis & Karathanassi 2018;Solberg et al 2007). Remote sensing data are becoming more accessible recently and some of it can be applied to detect oil spills (Harahsheh 2016).…”
