Reconstruction Of Oil Spill Trajectory In The Java Sea, Indonesia Using Sar Imagery

Abstract: Oil spill phenomena in the ocean possess a very serious threat to ocean health. On the ocean surface, oil slicks immediately start to spread and mostly end up in the ecosystem. Furthermore, it could threaten the organisms living in the ocean or impact nearby coastal area. The aim of this research was to investigate the trajectories of oil spill based on a real accident in the Java Sea. Tracking oil spills using satellite images is an efficient method that provides valuable information about trajectories, locat… Show more

“…Oil spills in the Karawang waters are carried by currents influenced by wind direction. When a leak occurs in the YYA-1 pipeline, the wind direction moves from east to west, thus bringing the oil spill to the Muara Gembong waters [24]. The identification results were strengthened by discovering an oil spill in the area of Pantai Muara Bungin, Pantai Beting, Pantai Mekar dan Pantai Bahagia [25].…”

“…The duration of the oil spill is also known from July to November 2019, occurred 5 months, so it is categorized in the medium criteria. [9,24] Various sources state that oil has a degradation process that takes years, which is often a problem because the environment around the oil spill has been polluted [11,12,[33][34][35]. Despite that, the case in Muara Gembong is different because of the excellent and fast handling of Pertamina and the locals who helped the process [36].…”

“…This could be particularly important as the temporal components of a trajectory could be missing or unreliable. For example, in the case of a trajectory that was inferred from an aerial image containing the traces of a moving object [ 22 , 23 ], the temporal component would be missing altogether or in the cases of a trajectory that was based on a sequence of images with a low temporal resolution (for example, refer to [ 24 , 25 ]), the kinematic descriptors may not be reliable. Additionally, it is common for the time reporting mechanism of a GPS device to glitch and cause “uncertainty” [ 2 ].…”

“…The improved Cloude-Pottier decomposition is widely used for segmentation and classification purposes (Ji and Wu 2015). Dual polarized SAR data has wide ranged application (Abimanyu et al 2021), specially in land feature extractions (Sinha et al 2018a). The relatively easy data availability from spaceborne dual polarimetric SAR missions, like ASAR, Sentinel-1 and PALSAR with wider swath and greater temporal availability has more applicability (Potin et al 2014).…”
