“…Microcalcifications can be the sole sign of precancerous or of already infiltrating mammary carcinoma (Paterok et al 1993). Mainly because of their significance for the detection of early breast cancer, the imaging of these calcifications has been investigated by numerous authors during the last two decades.…”

“…Thus, at present it is still the most important breast imaging technique. Nevertheless x-ray mammography has some shortcomings in terms of sensitivity and specificity: on the one hand 5-15% of breast cancers are not visualized mammographically (Langer and de Paredes 1990, Bird et al 1992, Weinreb and Newstead 1994, and on the other hand the overall yield of breast cancers per number of breast biopsies recommended on the basis of screening mammograms ranges between roughly 10 and 50% (Baines et al 1986, Heywang 1988, Hurley and Kaldor 1992, Kerlikowske et al 1993, Paterok et al 1993, Weinreb and Newstead 1994. This explains the continuous search for other imaging methods, which could be suited for breast cancer screening and/or helpful in the differentiation between benign and malignant lesions.…”
