Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome in patients with chronic idiopathic urticaria

Abstract: Urticaria is a disease which progresses with itchy papules and plaques called urtica, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is defined as daytime sleepiness and obstructive apnea and hypopnea attacks during sleep. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between urticaria and OSAS. Thirty-one patients with chronic idiopathic urticaria were included in the study. Body mass indexes (BMIs) were calculated and polysomnography findings were recorded. Epworth Sleepiness

“… 23 However, recent studies suggest that CU patients are at an increased risk for developing sleep-related breathing disorders compared to the general population, including OSA. 12 , 13 , 14 For example, a previous article found that 41.9% of CU patients had OSA confirmed by polysomnography that was mostly considered mild. In our study, we found that roughly 4 out of 10 CU patients had a high to intermediate risk for OSA based on screening with the STOP-Bang questionnaire.…”

“…Alatas et al reported OSAS in 13 (41.9%) of 31 chronic spontaneous urticaria patients. 10 Cherrez-Ojeda et al studied 171 Latin American patients with chronic urticaria and reported moderate to severe OSAS in 4 of every 10 urticaria patients. 20 In this regard, our findings were consistent with the literature.…”

“…11,12 Angioedema, which is present in up to 70% of patients with CSU, may also affect sleep. 13 Wakefulness promoted by histamine released from mast cells and comorbidities such as sleep apnea 14 may also contribute to sleep interference. It is clear that sleep loss negatively affects performance at work and daily functioning, significantly impacts social lives, and is associated with lower life expectancy.…”
