Objective assessment of photoageing effects using high-frequency ultrasound in PUVA-treated psoriasis patients

Abstract: Long-term PUVA treatment in psoriasis patients accelerates thinning of the skin in comparison to age-matched controls. The results show that ultrasonography is a sensitive method to investigate the effects of PUVA-induced skin ageing.

“…32 An increased risk of cataract can be expected in patients undergoing PUVA or NB-UV-B therapy based on animal studies. 33 Therefore, eye protection is essential during irradiation, and additional UV-blocking glasses are recommended during daytime in patients who take oral psoralens.…”

“…These data are comparable to ours, given that we measured a median increase in skin thickness of 6.4% after 7 months of HRT. No major changes may be expected over a period of 7 months in patients with a skin thickness of around 1 mm, for, as we found in an earlier study 13 , the skin of patients after 20 years of psoralen plus ultraviolet A (PUVA) therapy was only 1.1-14.4% thinner than that of comparable persons without PUVA treatment, depending on the measuring site. An improvement of that magnitude within a 7-month period may thus Hormone replacement therapy and skin aging Sator et al…”
