The present study examined the antiobesity effect and mechanism of action of Korean white ginseng extracts (KGE) using high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice. Mice were fed a low-fat diet (LFD), HFD or HFD containing 0.8 and 1.6% (w/ w) KGE diet (HFD ? 0.8KGE and HFD ? 1.6KGE) for 8 weeks. We also examined the effects of KGE on plasma triglyceride (TG) elevation in mice administrated with oral lipid emulsion. Body weight gain and white adipose tissue (WAT) weight were significantly decreased in the HFD ? 1.6KGE group, compared with the HFD group. The plasma TG levels were also significantly reduced in both HFD ? 0.8KGE and HFD ? 1.6KGE groups, while leptin levels were significantly decreased in only the HFD ? 1.6KGE group, compared with the HFD group. The HFD ? 1.6KGE group showed significantly lower mRNA levels of lipogenesis-related genes, including peroxisome proliferator-activated receptorc2 (PPARc2), sterol regulatory element binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c), lipoprotein lipase (LPL), fatty acid synthase (FAS) and diacylglycerol acyltransferase 1 (DGAT1), compared with the HFD group. In addition, a dose of 1000 mg/kg KGE inhibited the elevation of plasma TG levels compared with mice given the lipid emulsion alone. These results suggest that the anti-obesity effects of KGE may be elicited by regulating expression of lipogenesis-related genes in WAT and by delaying intestinal fat absorption.

Because little is known about risk factors for obesity, the authors tested whether certain psychological and behavioral variables predicted future onset of obesity. The authors used data from a prospective study of 496 adolescent girls who completed a baseline assessment at age 11-15 years and 4 annual follow-ups. Self-reported dietary restraint, radical weight-control behaviors, depressive symptoms, and perceived parental obesity-but not high-fat food consumption, binge eating, or exercise frequency-predicted obesity onset. Results provide support for certain etiologic theories of obesity, including the affect regulation model. The fact that self-reported, weight-control behaviors identified girls at risk for obesity implies that high-risk youths are not engaging in effective weight-control methods and suggests the need to promote more effective strategies.

RESUMO:A prevalência da obesidade tem aumentado progressivamente e seu tratamento é imprescindível, pois ela está associada ao aparecimento de diversas doenças crônicas.Dentre as opções terapêuticas para a obesidade, o tratamento clínico é fundamental, sendo parte integrante inclusive do tratamento cirúrgico e tem como objetivo mudar o estilo de vida do indivíduo obeso, melhorando seu padrão alimentar e também estimulando a prática de atividade física. Para isso é preciso identificar as falhas tanto no comportamento alimentar do paciente, quanto outros erros nos seus hábitos de vida.Não existem evidências que indique qual a composição mais adequada da dieta para se promover uma maior perda de peso, porém uma alimentação equilibrada parece promover mais saúde e bem estar do que dietas altamente restritivas em algum tipo de nutriente e ser igualmente eficaz em promover perda de peso.Apesar de ser uma das enfermidades metabólicas mais antigas da humanidade, as opções farmacológicas para tratamento da obesidade são limitadas e apresentam diversos efeitos colaterais. Além disso, as mudanças de estilo de vida e do hábito alimentar promovem resultado mais duradouro quando comparados ao tratamento farmacológico isolado. O tratamento farmacológico deve auxiliar o paciente a mudar seu hábito alimentar e não simplesmente reduzir a sensação de fome e a ingestão alimentar. Descritores 1-INTRODUÇÃOA obesidade é, provavelmente, a enfermidade metabólica mais antiga que se conhece. A interpretação de obesidade varia de época para época, refletindo os valores culturais e científicos de cada uma. Assim, mulheres com formas arredondadas eram modelos de beleza na Renascença 1 .Apesar destes valores culturais, a obesidade está intimamente relacionada a um aumento na incidência de doenças cardiovasculares, hiperlipemia, hipertensão arterial sistêmica, diabetes, entre outras 2 . A alta prevalência e a importância das comorbidades fazem com que a obesidade seja considerada, uma das mais importantes doenças nutricionais do mundo ocidental 3 .
