Cytotoxicity assays using cell cultures may be an alternative to assess biological toxicity of plant extracts with potential phytotherapeutic properties. This study compared three methods to prepare culture media for the exposure of Vero cells to plant extracts. Leaves of Glandularia selloi (Spreng.) Tronc. were used to prepare culture medium with aqueous extract, extract in culture medium and methanol extract. Toxicity was assessed using the MTT and neutral red (NR) assays. In general, alterations in the cellular functions were found in all extracts and assays. Cytotoxic effect occurred at lower doses in aqueous extract and the range of effect of the methanol extract was small. The procedure of preparing the test medium has an effect on the outcome of the assay. Cytotoxicity of plant extract can be assessed by MTT and NR assays. Aqueous extract added to the culture medium presented the best profile to assess cytotoxicity.

Resumo O Parque Estadual da Serra do Papagaio está localizado no sul de Minas Gerais, e faz parte do Complexo da Serra da Mantiqueira, com vegetação representada por campos de altitude, floresta ombrófila densa e floresta ombrófila mista. O presente estudo teve como objetivo realizar um tratamento florístico para Verbenaceae nesta Unidade de Conservação. A família está representada no Parque por dez táxons distribuídos em quatro gêneros: Glandularia (G. lobata var. glabrata e G. phlogiflora), Lantana (L. camara e L. fucata), Lippia (L. lupulina, L. rotundifolia, L. stachyoides var. martiana e L. triplinervis) e Verbena (V. alata e V. hirta). Verbena alata destaca-se como nova ocorrência para o estado de Minas Gerais. Lippia rotundifolia e L. stachyoides var. martiana, comuns na Cadeia do Espinhaço, são registradas pela primeira vez na Serra da Mantiqueira, no domínio Atlântico. São apresentadas chaves de identificação, descrições, ilustrações e comentários ecológicos, taxonômicos e de distribuição geográfica dos táxons.

A native plant of Biome Pampa (Southern Brazil), the Glandularia peruviana (L.) Small species has been, until now, little studied as ornamental plant for use as mulch and formation of massifs. Whilst this species didn't suffer any genetic improvement process, it is extremely ornamental by its color and size. In order to promote its comercial propagation and its use to improve the Pampa biodiversity, this study was conducted to know, as a ruderal plant native from South America, how the behavior of the plants was when employed plant propagation and use of artificial auxin on the cuttings. The test consisted of assessing the growth of cuttings treated or not with indol-butyric acid, analyzed at diferent ages, at 21, 24, 27 and 31 days in the University of Passo Fundo, Passo Fundo, Brazil. It was observed that the plant total dry mass values showed no standard of behavior, values for dry matter, whether of leaves, stem, root, shoot and total not responded to treatments and analyzed ages. The same occurred for specific leaf weight, plant height, number of green leaves, number of dead leaves, average leaf length and average number of stems. The lack of significant treatment and age effects may be explained by the plant primitiveness, which is ruderal, so its development has little influenced by the propagation practices.
