Objective: to explain the research strategies/designs in mixed method studies proposed by Creswell, and to reflect on the applicability of the mixed approaches in scientific nursing research.Method: a reflexive theoretical essay based on Creswell as a conductor for reflections on mixed research. The reflection was organized in a guiding axis that relates the basic theoretical constructs of the mixed methods and their applicability in the area of nursing.Results: with the explanation of the six strategies of mixed research oriented by the author, including three in the sequential design and three in the concomitant, reflections emerged in the applicability of each of the strategies for scientific research in nursing, as well as practical examples of investigations on the use of scarce national and international literature available in the area.Conclusion: mixed methods seem to emerge as the third and new paradigm of scientific research and, once the complexity of the phenomena that can be researched by nursing is recognized, mixed research tends to favor deeper interpretations of its research subject. The researchers of the area must be dedicated to the mixed research project design, and Creswell's reference/design appears to be advantageous to its apprehension. DESCRIPTORS:Research design. MÉTODOS MISTOS NA PESQUISA EM ENFERMAGEM: POSSIBILIDADES DE APLICAÇÃO À LUZ DE CRESWELL RESUMOObjetivo: explanar sobre os desenhos/estratégias de pesquisa em métodos mistos propostos por Creswell, e refletir sobre a aplicabilidade das abordagens mistas de investigação científica na enfermagem.Método: ensaio-teórico reflexivo embasado essencialmente ao referencial de Creswell como condutor às reflexões sobre pesquisa mista. A reflexão foi organizada em um eixo condutor que relaciona os construtos teóricos básicos dos métodos mistos e sua aplicabilidade na área da enfermagem.Resultados: com a explanação das seis estratégias de pesquisa mista orientadas pelo autor, entre elas três no desenho sequencial e três no concomitante, foram tecidas reflexões sobre a aplicabilidade de cada uma das estratégias para a pesquisa científica na enfermagem, além de exemplificações práticas de investigações mistas ao uso da escassa literatura nacional e internacional disponível na área.Conclusão: os métodos mistos parecem emergir como o terceiro e novo paradigma da investigação científica e, uma vez reconhecida a complexidade dos fenômenos passíveis a serem pesquisados pela enfermagem, a pesquisa mista tende a favorecer interpretações mais aprofundadas sobre os seus objetos de estudo. Hánecessidade de franca dedicação dos pesquisadores da área no delineamento do projeto de pesquisa mista, e o referencial de Creswell parece ser profícuo à sua apreensão. Objective:To report the nurse's experience of inclusion in interdisciplinary clinical study about technological innovation, involving people with spinal cord injury. Method: Descriptive experience report. The empirical support was based on notes about perspectives and practice of clinical research, with a multi-professional nursing, physical education, physiotherapy and engineering staff. Result: The qualification includes the elaboration of the document for the Ethics Committee, familiarization among the members of staff and with the studied topic, and also an immersion into English. The nurse's knowledge gave support to the uptake of participants and time adequacy for data collection, preparation and assistance of the participants during the intervention and after collection. Nursing theories and processes have contributed to reveal risky diagnoses and the plan of care. It was the nurse's role to monitor the risk of overlapping methodological strictness to the human aspect. The skills for the clinical research must be the object of learning, including students in multidisciplinary researches. Conclusion: To qualify the nurse for clinical research and to potentialize its caregiver essence, some changes are needed in the educational system, professional behavior, attitude and educational assistance.

Objective: to understand the meanings that permeate the connections between the production / research results and the nursing work process in the care context. Method: explanatory style research using a qualitative approach, with theoretical and methodological references: Theory of Complexity and grounded theory, respectively. The data were collected from 25 subjects, distributed in three sample groups: ten clinical nurses linked to a university hospital; six nurse researchers and nine undergraduate nursing students. The semi-structured interview was used as a data collection technique. The research was validated by ten reviewers from different regions of Brazil. Results:The following category is presented: Facing Emerging Nursing Challenges in the Age of Science, Innovation and Technology, based on the subcategories: Starting points for contextualized nursing: from scientific production to the utilization of research results; And Fragile connections between scientific production and nursing care practice.Conclusion: the systems of meanings that influence the connections between scientific research and nursing care practice are structured and strengthened by plural phenomena, among which are the negative inflections of the communication process, presence and recognition between who produces research and who can use it. Os dados foram coletados com 25 sujeitos, distribuídos em três grupos amostrais: dez enfermeiros assistenciais, vinculados a um hospital universitário; seis enfermeiros pesquisadores e nove estudantes de graduação em enfermagem. A entrevista semiestruturada foi utilizada como técnica de coleta de dados. A pesquisa foi validada por dez juízes de diferentes regiões do Brasil.Resultados: apresenta-se a categoria: Enfrentando desafios emergentes da enfermagem na era da ciência, inovação e tecnologia, alicerçada pelas subcategorias: Pontos de partida para uma enfermagem contextualizada: da produção científica ao consumo de resultados de pesquisa; e Conexões fragilizadas entre produção científica e prática assistencial da enfermagem.Conclusão: os sistemas de significados que influenciam as conexões entre pesquisa científica e prática assistencial da enfermagem são estruturados e fortalecidos por fenômenos plurais, dentre os quais estão as inflexões negativas do processo de comunicação, presença e pertencimento dos pares, entre quem produz pesquisa e quem poderá consumi-la.
