Nutrition and Quality in Ornamental Plants

Abstract: <p>The visual quality of ornamental plants is necessarily linked to an adequate balance of nutrients. Plant height, shape and coloration are qualitative aspects of ornamental species, directly influenced by mineral nutrition, among other environmental aspects. The nutritional requirements of ornamental species are not yet well established, often resulting in inefficient use of chemical and organic fertilizers, without respecting the needs of each species as well as the proper time for application. “…Symptoms of mineral deficiency can affect different plant organs; in the case of ornamental plants, when these organs are the flowers, inflorescences or foliage, there is a significant impact on the quality of the final product, consequently affecting the final price thereof (FURTINI NETO et al, 2015). For plants fertilized with 0.5 g L -1 , a delay was observed in flowering, since no plant of this treatment presented open flowers, increasing the crop cycle.…”

“…Lack and excess of nutrients are detrimental to the quality of ornamental plants, since floriculture is a relatively recent activity when compared to other commercial crops, so the available literature on the mineral nutrition of ornamental plants is still scarce (FURTINI NETO et al, 2015). Therefore, the present work had as objective to evaluate nitrogen doses on the growth of potted Calceolaria x herbeohybrida Voss.…”

“…However, most producers use conventional fertilizers available in the market, which are developed with the aim to attend crops of food production (Takane, Yanagisawa, and Pivetta 2010). This results in high cultivation costs and products of poor quality, what explains the importance of knowing the species nutrition requirements (Furtini, Boldrin, and Mattson 2015).…”

“…Thus, research is important to exploit such native species as new cultivation options. Compared to other commercial crops, floriculture is a relatively recent activity; thus, the information available on mineral nutrition required by ornamental plants is still limited (FURTINI NETO et al, 2015), and for cultivation of native species, the information is even more limited.…”
