Plant development and nutrient uptake rate in Dendrobium nobile Lindl

Abstract: Dendrobium nobile Lindl. is one of the most cultivated and distributed orchids around the world; however, information on its nutrition is scarce. Our objective was to study the plant development and nutrient accumulation in plants of D. nobile weekly fertilized with 100 mL Sarruge nutrient solution at 75% concentration. One plant per replication was randomly collected every month, along 12 months, totaling four plants. Dry matter (DM) and nutrient accumulation were determined for the different plant parts. Pla… Show more

“…The largest sinks for the nutrients were storage roots, followed by stems and leaves ( Table 3 and S1). Such a nutrient uptake pattern was expected since there was more DM in storage roots ( Ichinose et al, 2018 ). The differences in nutrient uptake among the treatments clearly show that crop growth was limited by the inadequate nutrient supply due to poor soil fertility.…”

“…Adjusting the pH of the culture medium is important to ensure the plant's physiological processes are not disturbed. Acidic medium prevents the uptake of phosphoric acid, Ca 2+ , and Mg 2+ ; alkalic medium prevents the uptake of iron, Cu 2+ , Zn 2+ , Mn 2+ , and boron (Bell et al 2020;Jakobsone and Osvalde 2019;Ichinose et al 2018). In addition, pH affects the solubility and absorption of nutrients by activating certain enzymes and solidifying gelling agents; and preventing the absorption of toxic substances (Sahu et al 2017;Lager et al 2010).…”

“…Orchid growers adopt a variety of fertilization practices, with a wide range of fertilizers and innumerable combinations and formulations of organic fertilizers (Hoshino et al, 2016a). Organic fertilization has the advantages of gradual release of nutrients, increase in biological activity and greater nutrient diversity, besides being composed of products made with the use of residues (Naik et al, 2009;Ichinose et al, 2018). In view of the above, the objective of this work was to evaluate different substrates and fertilization intervals in the vegetative development and flowering of an Encyclia hybrid.…”
