The objectives of this study were to determine the chemical composition and ruminal nutrient degradabilities of grain of five hybrids of pearl millet grown in southwestern Quebec. Hybrids were selected because they were poor hosts of the widely prevalent root lesion nematode (Pratylenchus penetrans). Neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent lignin were similar for all hybrids. However, acid detergent fiber (ADF) was higher for CGPMH-1 than CGPMH-7 and CGPMH-38 and was higher for CGPMH-11 and CGPMH-20 than CGPMH-7. Starch content was higher for CGPMH-7 (668 g kg (1 DM) than the other hybrids (average 635 g kg (1 DM). Crude protein (CP) was lower for CGPMH-7 (141 g kg (1 DM) than the other hybrids (average 181 g kg (1 DM). Fatty acid content was higher for CGPMH-11 and CGPMH-20 than CGPMH-38. Linoleic acid was the most abundant fatty acid in all hybrids and was lower for CGPMH-38 than the other hybrids. Ruminal dry matter degradability was similar for all hybrids (average 69.5%). However, ruminal CP and starch degradabilities were higher for CGPMH-1 and CGPMH-20 than CGPMH-11 and CGPMH-38. RESUMO -Foram conduzidos dois ensaios de digestibilidade, objetivando-se estudar o valor nutricional de quatro diferentes milhetos (BN2, COMUM, IAPAR e IAPAR-REPASSE) processados em moinhos com três tipos de peneiras (diâmetros de furo de 3, 2 e 1 mm). Os coeficientes de digestibilidade (CD) da energia bruta (CDEB) e o coeficiente de metabolizabilidade (CM) da energia bruta (CMEB) relativos à peneira de 3 mm foram: 63,09 e 61,20% (COMUM); 71,57 e 69,66% (IAPAR) e 67,39 e 65,60% (BN2 Chemical Composition, Nutrients and Energy Digestibility of Pearl Millets (Pennisetum glaucum (l.) R. Brown) Fed to Growing PigsABSTRACT -Two digestibility trials were carried out, to study the nutritional value of four types of pearl millet (BN2, Comum, Iapar and Iapar-Repasse), grounded through 3, 2, and 1 mm screen. The digestibility coefficient (DC) of gross energy (GEDC) and gross energy metabolization coefficient (GEMC) relative to 3 mm screen were: 63.09 and 61.20% (Comum); 71.57 and 69.66% (Iapar) and 67.39 and 65.60% (BN2). The GEDC and GEMC of COMUM were lower than IAPAR and both were similar to BN2. The IAPAR-REPASSE showed GEDC (70.62%) and GEMC (68.49%) similar to the Iapar. The Iapar-1 mm (84.61 and 81.41%) showed higher GEDC and GEMC than Iapar-3 mm (70.59 e 68.71%) and Iapar-2 mm (77.73 e 75.46%). The values of digestible energy (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) for the Iapar (3 mm) were 3,030 kcal/kg and 3,001 kcal/kg, respectively. The IAPAR (2 and 1 mm) showed DE of 3,083 and 3,355kcal/ kg and ME of 2,993 and 3,228 kcal/kg. The Iapar-Repasse showed the values of: 2,849 kcal/kg (DE) and 2,763 kcal/kg (ME). The COMUM (3 and 2 mm) showed values of: 2,574 and 3,022 kcal/kg (DE) and 2,497 and 2,932 kcal/kg (ME). The BN2 (3 and 2 mm) showed values of: 2,692 and 3,047 kcal/kg (DE); 2,620 and 2,966 kcal/kg (ME). The different pearl millets showed variations in chemical composition. The differences result in variations on nutritional values. The Iapar pearl millet, showed the best values, followed by BN2 and Comum.

RESUMO -Objetivou-se com este trabalho determinar os coeficientes de digestibilidade ileal aparente e verdadeira e de aminoácidos, utilizando-se a técnica da cânula T simples, com suínos. Foram utilizados oito suínos canulados, machos, castrados (Landrace x Large White). Os alimentos analisados foram: quirera de arroz, sorgo baixo tanino, farelo de trigo, milheto, leveduras de cana e de cerveja. As dietas contendo a quirera de arroz, sorgo, farelo de trigo e milheto como fonte de proteína foram formuladas para fornecer 7% de proteína bruta e as demais dietas contendo as leveduras de cana e de cerveja foram formuladas para fornecer 13% de proteína bruta. Foi adicionado 0,5% de óxido crômico nas dietas experimentais, como marcador de digestibilidade. A coleta da digesta foi feita após período de adaptação de cinco dias para determinação do consumo de ração, três dias para regularização do fluxo intestinal, num período de 24 horas, feitas a intervalos de 3 horas, começando logo após a alimentação. As amostras foram obtidas de digestas coletadas de grupos de dois animais. Entre os alimentos avaliados, a quirera de arroz, sorgo e milheto apresentaram os maiores coeficientes de digestibilidade verdadeira, enquanto os menores valores foram obtidos para o farelo de trigo. A treonina foi o aminoácido essencial de menor digestibilidade verdadeira na quirera de arroz, farelo de trigo e nas leveduras de cerveja e cana. Were used eight barrows canulated (Landrace x Large White). The feedstuffs evaluated were rice broked, low tanine sorghum, wheat bran, millet, brewer yeast and sugar cane yeast. The diets with rice broked, sorghum, wheat bran, millet as protein source were formulated to provide 7% of crude protein and the others diets with brewer's and sugar cane yeasts were formulated to provide 13% of crude protein. Chromic oxide was used as digestibility marker. The collect of digest was made after adaptation period of five days para determination of feed intake and three days for the regularization of intestinal flux, for a period of 24 hours, in intervals of three hours beggining after the feed intake. The samples were obtained from digests collected from groups of two animals. Among the evaluated feedstuffs, the rice broked, sorghum and millet showed higher coefficients of true digestibility, while the lower values were obtained to wheat bran. Threonine was the essential aminoacid with lower digestibility in rice broked, wheat bran, brewer yeast and sugar cane yeast. Lysine was the aminoacid less digestible in sorghum and millet.
