Poly( p-alanine), -(-NH -CH2-CH2 -CO-), -, and poly(a-methyl-(j-alanine), -(-NH-CH2-CH(CH3)-CO-),-,dissolved in trichloroacetic acid, have been analyzed by high resolution NMR. In the case of poly(9-alanine) it has been possible to show that the gauche-conformer, obtained by rotation around the CHz-CHz bond of the monomer unit, has a lower enthalpy than the trans-conformer. This might suggest that the CO and NH groups on adjacent carbons undergo some positive interaction which could reduce the enthalpy of the gauche state well below that of the trans. Owing to the rapid decomposition of poly(a-methyl-P-alanine) in trichloroacetic acid a t temperatures higher than 120°C, it was not possible to obtain from the NMR-spectra of this polymer the sign of the enthalpy differences between trans and gauche conformations around the CHz-CH(CH3) bonds. The spectral parameters obtained a t 116 O C , however, seem to indicate that, in poly(a-methylp-alanine) as well, an interaction between CO and NH on vicinal carbons tends to stabilize the gauche form.
ZUSAMMENFASSUNG:Poly-P-alanin und Poly-a-methyl-P-alanin wurden, in Trichloressigsaure gelost, beiTemperaturen iiber 100 O C durch hochauflosende NMR-Spektroskopie untersucht. Fiir das Poly-P-alanin konnte gezeigt werden, da13 das gauche-Konformere, das dumb Rotation einer Monomereinheit um die CH2-CHs-Bindung erhalten wird, eine niedrigere Enthalpie besitzt als das trans-Konformere. Dies spricht fur eine Wechselwirkung zwischen der COund der NH-Gruppe an benachbarten Kohlenstoffatomen, wodurch die Enthalpie des gauche-Konformeren im Vergleich zu der des trans-Konformeren betrachtlich erniedrigt wiirde. Da sich das Poly-a-methyl-p-alanin in Trichloressigsaurelosung bei Temperaturen iiber 120 O C rasch zersetzt, konnte aus den NMR-Spektren dieses Polymeren das Vorzeichen der Enthalpiedifferenz zwischen der trans-und der gauche-Konformation (Rotation u m die CHz-CH(CH3)-Bindung) nicht bestimmt werden. Die bei 116 O C erhaltenen Spektralparameter deuten jedoch an, da13 auch im Poly-a-methyl-P-alanin eine Wechselwirkung zwischen der COund der NH-Gruppe an benachbarten Kohlenstoffatomen besteht, wodurch das gauche-Konformere stabilisiert wiirde.
