Novel Physically Cross-Linked Curcumin-Loaded PVA/Aloe vera Hydrogel Membranes for Acceleration of Topical Wound Healing: In Vitro and In Vivo Experiments

Abstract: This study aims to prepare novel cross-linked antimicrobial membranes composed of PVA-Aloe vera hydrogels using novel physically cross-linked method via transforming PVA to high crystalline structure using propanol. Curcumin was incorporated to improve the membrane biological properties; while gentamycin improved sharply antimicrobial properties. PVA-Aloe vera hydrogel membranes were analyzed by FTIR, SEM, XRD and TGA measurements for characterizing resultant cross-linked membranes. Physicochemical measurement… Show more

“…It is clear that for prepared Cs-g-PAAm/AgNPs, Cs-g-PAAm/AuNPs, and Cs-g-PAAm/Au–Ag-NPs nanocomposites killed 95.8, 78.6, and 91.7% of the cells, respectively. This means that C-g-PAAm/AgNPs nanocomposite hydrogel inhibits cell proliferation the most effectively with IC 50 value of 8.6 ± 1.34 which is considered a very strong cytotoxic biomaterial 47 . In addition, the greatest of IC 50 values were observed with Cs-g-PAAm/AuNPs nanocomposite hydrogel reaching 39.6 µg/mL.…”

“…36 The overlapped patterns are found because cross-linked PVA is more crystalline than non-cross-linked and is showing larger peak area. 53 The graph indicated blending between AV, CS, GG, and glutaraldehyde by representing a minimal shift in 2θ values. The presence of more AV contents in ACGG-3 created more compactness to cause more favorable H-bonding and consequently increasing crystallinity.

“…Albumin-based hydrogels are used mainly in tissue engineering for several detailed applications, such as wound healing, bone repair, vascular endothelium, scaffold materials and so on. Researchers in Romania constructed a composite hydrogel based on BSA, and the hydrogel showed properties that could be better applied for wound healing ( Kenawy et al, 2021 ). The use of an albumin-based hydrogel (containing BMP2) constructed by Zhang et al can significantly promote the production of new bone within 13 weeks, the result showed it was effective in accelerating the bridging of tibial bone defects ( Kossover et al, 2020 ).…”
