Research progress on albumin-based hydrogels: Properties, preparation methods, types and its application for antitumor-drug delivery and tissue engineering

Abstract: Albumin is derived from blood plasma and is the most abundant protein in blood plasma, which has good mechanical properties, biocompatibility and degradability, so albumin is an ideal biomaterial for biomedical applications, and drug-carriers based on albumin can better reduce the cytotoxicity of drug. Currently, there are numerous reviews summarizing the research progress on drug-loaded albumin molecules or nanoparticles. In comparison, the study of albumin-based hydrogels is a relatively small area of resear… Show more

“…Effects of Formulation and Process Factors on DTX-BSA-NPs Prepared by Thermal-Driven Self-Assembly BSA NPs have been extensively investigated for the delivery of anticancer drugs due to their excellent biocompatibility, nontoxicity, non-immunogenicity, biodegradability, and ability to target tumor tissues through specific receptor interactions. 45,46 As a novel organic solvent-free approach to produce albumin NPs, 47 thermal-driven self-assembly was used in the current study to prepare DTX-BSA-NPs.…”

“…The degradation rate is influenced by factors such as the composition of the hydrogel, cross-linking density, the presence of enzymes or catalysts, and the physicochemical environment. As the hydrogel degrades, the therapeutic agents are gradually released into the surrounding medium [124,125].…”

“…Modifying nanoparticle size and shape, utilizing enzyme-inhibiting coatings, and employing cryopreservation and lyophilization address issues related to immune evasion, enzymatic degradation, and structural integrity [234,235]. Implementations of antioxidants, hydrogel encapsulation, and optimized buffer solutions offer protection against various stresses and maintain albumin structure [236,237]. Molecular imprinting and stimuli-responsive elements have also been utilized for improved drug loading and controlled delivery [238][239][240][241].…”
