Novel method utilizing microbial treatment for cleaner production of diosgenin from Dioscorea zingiberensis C.H. Wright (DZW)

Abstract: A novel method utilizing microbial treatment for cleaner production of diosgenin from Dioscorea zingiberensis C.H. Wright (DZW) was presented. A new Bacillus pumilus HR19, which has the great ability to secrete pectinase, was screened and applied in the microbial treatment. Low-pressure steam expansion pretreatment (LSEP) was employed in advance to assist microbial treatment efficiently in releasing saponins, which are the precursors of diosgenin. Compared with the traditional process of acid hydrolysis, this … Show more

“…Literature suggests that diosgenin is synthesized in its glycosidic form through phenylpropanoid pathway in the leaves and then, translocated to other plant parts, highest concentration being in the rhizomes [22] . The glycosidic form of diosgenin is pharmacologically less active and thus, for the production of active molecule the glycosidic bond needs to be hydrolyzed through acids, [16] enzymes [23] and, microorganisms [22] …”

“…[ 32 ] and Wei et al. [ 23 ] reported that a higher diosgenin yield by biotransformation could be achieved by optimizing various fermentation conditions. Therefore, further investigation needs to be carried out to provide higher tigogenin yield because of the complexity of enzymes during the biotransformation process.…”

“…Metode ekstraksi yang dipakai menggunakan campuran enzim dan ultrafiltrasi agar diperoleh kadar diosgenin optimal. Kelebihan metode tersebut dibanding metode konvensional ialah mengurangi penggunaan bahan kimia sehingga mengurangi pencemaran air (Liu et al 2010;Zhu et al 2010;Wei et al 2013;Pan et al 2014).…”
