“…Ever since the phenomenon of ferroelectricity in a chiral smectic C mesophase was observed in 1975, ferroelectric liquid crystals have attracted continuous attention owing to their potential applications in new technologies. Aer some initial research in chiral liquid crystalline 1,3,4-oxadiazoles, 29 Parra's group successfully obtained a chiral liquid crystalline 1,3,4-oxadiazole 20 (Scheme 10), 30 which exhibited enantiotropic chiral nematic (N*) and smectic C (SmC*) mesophases with wide temperature ranges, and a monotropic blue phase with a narrow temperature range. This was the rst example of a calamitic liquid crystalline 1,3,4-oxadiazole exhibiting ferroelectric properties with a large spontaneous polarization and a fast switching time (in the range of tens of milliseconds).…”

“…In spite of having similar structure, compounds based on 2,5‐diphenyl‐1,2,4‐oxadiazole units are not much explored either in the area of liquid crystals or in the area of OLEDs in comparison to substituted 1,3,4‐oxadiazole derivatives . Asymmetrical nature of 2,5‐diphenyl‐1,2,4‐oxadiazole derivatives provide a strong lateral dipole, which stabilizes different LC phases in comparison to their 1,3,4‐oxadiazole isomer . In addition, the bent angle is 141° which is more than that of 1,3,4‐oxadiazole derivative (bent angle of 134°), which in turn provides a much linear structure, thus helping in the mesophase stabilization.…”

“…Liquid crystalline polymers are widely studied because of their application in electronic and optical devices. 85 Liquid crystalline polymers, bearing photo-active chromophores, are important for the development of polymer-based smart materials, 106 reversible and irreversible information storage media, 107,108 holographic applications 109 and liquid crystalline display devices. 110 A range of polymers, bearing the BBCA moiety, were synthesized with backbone architectural variations and characterized for their liquid crystalline (LC) and other properties.…”
