Recent progress in luminescent liquid crystal materials: design, properties and application for linearly polarised emission

Luminescent liquid crystals (LCs) materials have attracted significant interests for organic optoelectronic applications, especially for linearly polarised emission, becaused of their combination of ordered alignment and luminescence property. Since the first polarised organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) demonstration in 1995, remarkable progress has been done with polarised electroluminescence because of continuous advances with the design of suitable LC materials. In this Review, we summarize luminescent LC materials with representative examples based on fluorescent materials, phosphorescent materials, and lanthanide complexes. The structure-property relationships for polarised emission and, when available, electroluminescence of these materials are presented and discussed, with a focus on phosphorescent metallomesogens. We also present the rational behind the design and development of luminescent LCs materials for high efficiency polarised OLEDs, along with the challenges ahead to achieve efficient devices.

A new class of extended conjugated mesogens, namely H-shaped mesogens based on 3,3ʹ,5,5ʹ-tetrasubstituted 2,2ʹ-bithiophene with oligo(1,4-phenyleneethynylene) arms, have been synthesised, and the relationships between molecular structures and mesomorphic properties investigated. Tetraalkyl, tetraalkoxy and dialkyldialkoxy derivatives, [R 1 C 6 H 4 CCC 6 H 2 (C 2 H 5 ) 2 CC] 2 [R 2 C 6 H 4 CCC 6 H 2 (C 2 H 5 ) 2 CC] 2 C 8 H 2 S 2 where R 1 and R 2 = alkyl and alkoxy chains of different lengths, exhibit nematic phases. The length, number and position of the terminal chains strongly affect the mesomorphic properties. The tetraalkyl derivatives in which R 1 = R 2 = pentyl to heptyl exhibit enantiotropic mesophases, whereas the derivatives with octyl or nonyl chains exhibit monotropic mesophases. The tetraalkoxy derivatives in which R 1 = R 2 = pentyloxy to nonyloxy all exhibit enantiotropic nematic phases. The mesophase range increases with increasing alkoxy chain length, except that the octyloxy and nonyloxy derivatives have almost the same temperature range. The dialkyldialkoxy derivatives in which R 1 = alkyl; R 2 = alkoxy and in which R 1 = alkoxy; R 2 = alkyl (R 1 and R 2 = heptyl, nonyl, hexyloxy or nonyloxy) exhibit enantiotropic mesophases. The derivatives in which R 1 = alkoxy have a significantly lower crystal-nematic transition temperature than the corresponding derivatives (R 2 = alkoxy), although the two types of derivatives have a similar nematic-isotropic transition temperature. New liquid crystals derived from thiophene connected to the 1,2,4-oxadiazole heterocycle

In this study, eight new compounds derived from thiophene were synthesised and characterised. The four symmetrical compounds contain two heterocyclic 1,2,4-oxadiazole on each side of the 2,5-disubstituted thiophene, and the four non-symmetrical compounds contain alkyne groups as a spacer replacing one of these heterocycles. Some of the compounds presented liquid crystalline properties with smectic and nematic mesophases. The non-symmetrical compounds presented low emission of blue light. ARTICLE HISTORY
