Novel approaches to vaccine development in lower-middle income countries

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify, analyze and describe the novel approaches that affect vaccine development in lower-middle income countries (LMICs). Design/methodology/approach The vaccine market in LMICs currently focuses on traditional Expanded Program for Immunization vaccines instead of new ones. Unlike the successful introduction of those traditional vaccines, the introduction of new vaccines appears to be very slow, mainly due to financial issues. This paper systematically reviews a se… Show more

“…The partnership should seek to maintain the sustainability of local production and be careful not to create dependency. A hybrid form of partnership entails collaboration in terms of incentives provided via government intervention while the pharma industry is left to lead the drug development (Siagian and Osorio, 2018). This type of strategy has been successful in India, where a combination of public-private partnership (PPP) and strong government support still allows space for the pharma industry to take control (Chatawayet al, 2007).…”

“…To confirm the answer of Likert-scaling questions and to avoid instrument bias that may either inflate or deflate the relationships between variables, respondents also had to fill out openended questions and then the variance of self-report data had to be tested after data collection following Harman's approach for a single factor of less than 50% (Tehseen et al, 2017). According to , which is followed in this study, the following latent variables were set to predict a decision to pursue drug development, determined by both theoretical and empirical studies in the field of drug development in developing countries (Lockhart et al, 2010;WHO 2011a, b;2017b, a;Siagian and Osorio, 2018;.…”

“…It must be noted that the government and pharmaceutical industries had different perspectives on regulation and market. The available literature attributed the difference to the government’s concern for communities, in contrast to the market-oriented focus of pharmaceutical industries [16,26]. In a field like pharmaceuticals, where mistakes can have major consequences, the safety, efficacy and quality of pharmaceutical products are primary reasons for incorporating human factors.…”

“…Vaccines are indispensable in protecting human and community health in terms of reducing infectious diseases, disability, and deaths and, most importantly, eliminating and eradicating the long-term disease. The development of the vaccine, which began with the observations of Edward Jenner at the end of the eighteenth century, has significantly reduced the number of infections and diseases until now [40][41][42]. Traditional vaccines (live-attenuated or inactivated vaccines) have been widely used over the last hundred years to develop effective vaccines against many diseases.…”
