Northeast monsoon rainfall variability over south peninsular India and its teleconnections

Abstract: Rainfall over south peninsular India during the northeast (NE) monsoon season (Oct-Dec) shows significant interannual variation. In the present study, we relate the northeast monsoon rainfall (NEMR) over south peninsular India with the major oscillations like El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), and Equatorial Indian Ocean Oscillation (EQUINOO) in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. For establishing the teleconnections, sea surface temperature, outgoing long wave radiation, and circulatio… Show more

“…In contrast, the negative phase reveals winds diverging and transporting moisture away from the south Indian region. The analysis by Sreekala et al (2011) shows that the probability of an El Niño year being a deficient NEMR year is small (0.22) compared to the year being an excess (0.41) monsoon year. With the additional information on IOD, more confidence on excess or deficient monsoons can be obtained.…”

“…The increasing trend in the NEMR during the recent years could be related to the increasing trend in the positive phase of the Indian Ocean Dipole Mode (Kripalani and Kumar, 2004). The inter-annual variability of the NEMR is linked to the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Indian Ocean Dipole and the EQUINOO (De and Mukhopadhyay, 1999;Bhanu Kumar et al, 2004;Kripalani and Kumar, 2004;Zubair and Ropelewski, 2006;Kumar et al, 2007;Sreekala et al, 2011). The NEMR and IOD are directly related suggesting that the positive (negative) phase enhances (suppresses) the northeast monsoon activity.…”

“…Recent results suggest that the path of propagation, i.e. geomagnetic field lines connecting the conjugate points should lie in the ionosphere, and ducted or pro-longitudinal mode of propagation is more likely to occur [18][19][20] . Studies are pursued and the results obtained will enhance the existing knowledge on the intricacies involved with low latitude whistlers.…”
