Nonverbal Behavior Observation: Collaborative Gaming Method for Prediction of Conflicts during Long-Term Missions

Abstract: Abstract. This paper presents a method for monitoring mental state of small isolated crews during long-term missions (such as space mission, polar expeditions, submarine crews, meteorological stations, and etc). It combines the records of negotiation game with monitoring of the nonverbal behavior of the players. We analyze the records of negotiation game that has taken place between the crew members who were placed in isolated environment for 105 days during the Mars-500 experiment. The outcomes of the analysi… Show more

“…Due to the additional burden imposed by active input requirements, efforts have focused on developing passive monitoring tools for space. Passive monitoring methods include detecting signs of stress in speech [ 22 , 23 ] and nonverbal behavior [ 24 ], wearable devices to monitor sleep [ 25 , 26 ] and team cohesion [ 27 , 28 ], and techniques for the real-time sampling of stress biomarkers [ 29 ].…”

“…Every second week, the participants were required to interact with each other through a computer environment for approximately 30 min as a part of our experiment. During these sessions, the participants were seated in front of the computers, performing different learning tasks and playing the modified CT game with one another [9], [10]. The frontal video records of facial expressions were made by the cameras located on the personal computers of the participants.…”
