Nonsmall cell lung cancer: evaluation of 737 consecutive patients in a single institution

Abstract: Patients with NSCLC who were admitted to our institution presented with histopathologic and clinical characteristics that were similar to previously published series in cancer hospitals. The best prognosis was associated with complete tumor resection with lymph node dissection, which is only achievable in earlier clinical stages.

“…Squamous cell carcinoma typically presents the highest survival rates and has been shown to constitute the most common cell type, (9,11,20) which corroborates our findings. However, in recent decades, adenocarcinoma, which is the histological type with the best prognosis among women, (21) has presented an increasing incidence, surpassing that of the squamous type in various studies in the literature.…”

“…(9,10) In the Americas, five-year survival rates as high as 28% are found. (11,12) Although the survival rates for lung cancer obtained in our study were lower than those observed in most of the studies found in the literature, a study of the indigenous population in Australia reported a survival rate similar to that found in our study, in which the five-year survival rate was only 5.2%. (13) Some authors have reported that women with lung cancer present higher survival rates than do men, regardless of stage at diagnosis, cell type or treatment instituted.…”

“…This is the largest population-based study conducted in Brazil with patients with NSCLC in which the histological subtypes were evaluated. Previous studies conducted in this country involving fewer centers and patients showed SCC to be the most common histological type [31][32][33][34].…”
