Nonlinear Optical Properties of Hexagonal Silicon Carbide

Abstract: Optical second harmonic coefficients, refractive indices, and optical transmission of hexagonal SiC have been measured at room temperature. The nonlinear coefficients measured relative to quartz for a 1.064-μm fundamental are d15SiC=(25± 3)d11α −SiO2, d31SiC=(27± 3)d11α −SiO2, and d33SiC=(45± 5)d11α −SiO2. The observed Miller δ coefficients are in poor agreement with the values calculated from Levine's bond-charge model. Type-II phase matching should be achievable with SiC for fundamental wavelengths greater t… Show more

“…62 A Veeco Wyko NT1100 optical profilometer with a 1 Å resolution was applied to measure the thickness using a refractive index of 2.65 for 3C-SiC films. 63 We measured E values of 400 GPa and 330 GPa for SiC(111) and SiC(100), respectively, using Hysitron Triboindenter nanoindentation on 1 lm thick films. 64 These values are in agreement with the data reported in literature.…”

“…A semi-infinite tungsten (W) layer is used as the substrate. Since the tungsten substrate is taken to be semi-infinite, the transmittance is identically zero, so that: data [156][157][158]. The effect of layer thickness variations due to thermal expansion on emittance/absorptance can be neglected.…”

“…3 Other materials, like the group-IV compound SiC that also crystallizes in zinc-blende structure, show much lower nonlinearities. 4 It is important to know in which way slight changes in the electronic structure and the size of the atoms give rise to a remarkable variation of the nonlinear optical properties.…”
