Optical second harmonic coefficients, refractive indices, and optical transmission of hexagonal SiC have been measured at room temperature. The nonlinear coefficients measured relative to quartz for a 1.064-μm fundamental are d15SiC=(25± 3)d11α −SiO2, d31SiC=(27± 3)d11α −SiO2, and d33SiC=(45± 5)d11α −SiO2. The observed Miller δ coefficients are in poor agreement with the values calculated from Levine's bond-charge model. Type-II phase matching should be achievable with SiC for fundamental wavelengths greater than 2.0 μm.
The extrinsic nature of nonlinear behavior observed in lead zirconate titanate ferroelectric ceramic J. Appl. Phys. 69, 7219 (1991); 10.1063/1.347616 Some electrical and optical properties of ferroelectric leadzirconate-leadtitanate thin films
Nonlinear optical coefficient, optical transmission, and refractive indices of orthorhombic lithium formate monohydrate single crystals have been measured. The crystals are transparent from 0.25 to about 1.2μm and suffer no optical damage. The SHG can be phase-matched for a large number of fundamental wavelengths in the range of transparency of the material. The phase-matchable nonlinear coefficient d24=d32=3.5× d11α-SiO2. For the 1.064 to 0.532μm conversion, both d24 and d32 are phase-matchable and the conversion efficiency is found to be twice that of LiIO3.
The stimulated emission cross section σ for the transitions 4F3/2→4I9/2,11/2 in NdP5O14 and La0.75Nd0.25P5O14 has been measured at 300 °K. For the strongest emission line at 1.0510 μm the value of σE∥b is 18×10−20 cm2, which is to be compared to the value of 46×10−20 cm2 for Nd : YAG. The fluorescence lifetimes of the 4F3/2 state in La1−xNdxP5O14 have been measured at 300 and 77 °K and were found to be independent of temperature. Based on the measured spectroscopic parameters the performance of LED−pumped La0.75Nd0.25P5O14, NdP5O14, and Nd : YAG have been compared both in the end−pumped and side−pumped configurations. In the end−pumped configuration the pentaphosphate has no advantage over Nd:YAG. In the side−pumped case the threshold for La0.75Nd0.25P5O14 is predicted to be lower than that for Nd:YAG.
We report on monolithically integrated 1 X 12 arrays of In,,,,Ga,.,,As p-i-n detectors and InGaAsP LED's for use in longwavelength optical communication system applications. The detectors are sensitive in the wavelength region of 0.95-1.65 pm, and the LED's emit at 1.30 pm. The devices utilize Si V-block fiber array connectors with one end polished at a 45" angle with respect to the fiber axis such that the optical path is bent by 90" to afford coupling laterally to the photonic device. The resultant structures are built in a 14-pin dual-inline (DIP) compact metal package, and are capable of operation at least up to 200 Mbit/s.
