Nonlinear effects in thin-film ferroelectric transmission lines at microwave frequencies

Abstract: In order to investigate the switching dynamics of ferroelectric materials at nanosecond time scales, we have measured the nonlinear response of ferroelectric-loaded transmission lines at microwave frequencies. We analyzed the third harmonic and intermodulation products produced by planar transmission lines incorporating ferroelectric thin films, and obtained the rf nonlinear capacitance C(V rf ). We also directly measured the change in capacitance of the same structures due to a dc applied voltage, C(V dc ). B… Show more

“…Consequently, lumped element capacitors are often used, an example of which are interdigitated capacitors (IDCs). Distributed effects, which are often overlooked, can compromise results from such devices at high frequencies, where the guided wavelength is comparable to the length of the device [25].Here, we report quantitative measurements of in-plane relative permittivity (ǫ 11 ) for Sr n+1 Ti n O 3n+1 thin films (n = 1, 2, 3) by means of an ultra-wideband approach [26]. To obtain the high-frequency behavior of the RP thin-films and their companion substrate (001) (LaAlO 3 ) 0.3 -(SrAl 0.5 Ta 0.5 O 3 ) 0.7 (LSAT), we exploited coplanar waveguides (CPWs) rather than IDCs, which were used at frequencies below 200 MHz.…”

“…Not only did the insertion losses decrease with the thermal treatment, the loss function trace was totally different. The 'as-received' trace had a distinct transition frequency, above which slower processes could not keep up with the driving field, 18 which is not present in the thermally treated sample. These differences are not artefacts of the measurement; they were observed on several samples using the same calibration procedure.…”
