Noncontact gravity compensator with magnetic fluid seals

Abstract: In vertical positioning systems, the friction force and the gravity load cause significant error. In order to minimize the effect of friction and gravity load, this paper presents the noncontact gravity compensator applying magnetic fluid seals. The structure of the magnetic fluid seals was proposed for the linear motion system, and the dimensions of the magnetic fluid seal components were determined based on the result of the magnetic field analysis using FEM. Magnetic field analysis was used in order to inve… Show more

“…A magnetic fluid seal is a new sealing method that is often applied to important parts that have strict requirements on sealing performance (Hasegawa et al, 2016;Mitamura and Durst, 2017), such as movable parts of spacesuits, X-ray diffractometer, radar waveguide components, and the main pump shaft of a sodium cooled fast reactor, etc. The operating conditions of these components are complicated.…”

“…9 Attempts are being made to use these types of seals in reciprocating motion, such as in a pneumatic actuator 10 or in a noncontact gravity compensator. 11 When designing a seal, magnetic field numerical simulations are very helpful. They allow the value of the magnetic field in the region of the seal stage to be determined, 12 an appropriate source of the magnetic field to be selected, or the seal structure to be optimized.…”
