Nodular fasciitis: correlation of MRI findings and histopathology

Abstract: Although similar findings were found in some lesions, the large histologic variability of NF hampers the definition of a prototype of NF on MRI. However, the MRI appearance of the myxoid subtype is rather characteristic. Histologic findings reflect the different SI characteristics and enhancement pattern on MRI.

“…Some solid tumors such as neurogenic tumors, nodular fasciitis, myxoid tumors, and dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans may reveal bright signal intensity on T2-weighted images and mimic cystic masses [16][17][18][19]. However, contrast-enhanced MR images show variable central enhancement within these masses, which is especially helpful for distinguishing solid tumors from epidermal cysts.…”

“…Excision of the lesion is usually curative [8], and, in our patient, no recurrence has been seen to date. However, recurrences have been reported [9,10], and, therefore, careful follow-up examinations are needed. Awareness that this type of abnormality is part of the differential diagnosis of intra-articular mass lesions, and good collaboration among surgeons, pathologists, and radiologists, will lead to the correct diagnosis.…”

“…Lesions having a myxoid matrix and hypercellularity in the early stage demonstrate higher SI than that of muscle on T1WIs and than that of fat on T2WIs. Mature lesions are often characterized by increased fibrosis, and the fibrotic areas present as markedly hypointense to the surrounding muscles on all pulse sequences (5,6) (Fig. 2).…”
